Do Standardized Tests Show an Accurate View of Students Abilities? (n.d.). Retrieved April 10,
2017, from http://education.cu-portland.edu/blog/news/do-standardized-test-show-an-accurate-
view-of-students-abilities/

Summary

This website gives the background of standardized testing; explaining why we have it and the

purpose of it. There are also arguments in it that share why it is important to have it and why it

should stay in schools. There are also views and arguments in this article from teachers so people

are able to see why some teachers believe that it should be in schools and the benefits of it. It

also has a section where there are arguments suggesting that there shouldnt be standardized

testing. It provides information on why there should no longer be testing and how it is not

helping students.

Evaluation

This would be a great source to use for the research paper because it shares factors of why there

should and shouldnt be standardized testing. There is some bias talking though when it comes to

why teachers believe there should be testing. It may influence people to believe that there should

be because it is coming from a teacher. It also would be good to use because it is intended for the

general audience so anyone could read it and see why the testing is helpful or not so they can

form their own opinion. The authors of this article are from Concordia University in Portland,

Oregon. There is a place at the bottom of the page so people can contact the school to find out

who actually wrote the article and find any other information out if needed.
Why Standardized Tests Don't Measure Educational Quality. Retrieved April 10, 2017, from
http://www.ascd.org/publications/educational-leadership/mar99/vol56/num06/Why-
Standardized-Tests-Don%27t-Measure-Educational-Quality.aspx

Summary

This article explains why standardized testing does not measure the quality of education in

different schools. It explains the two different types of standardized testing and their point. It also

goes into depth about the mission and overall purpose of it. it explains how it is making schools

only pay attention to the main subjects because they are wanting to practice and teach what is on

the test so their students will pass that they are going away from learning about everything and

spending an equal amount on every subject. There are also examples of test questions so people

can see what kind of work the students are having to learn in order to pass these tests. There is

also another section that shares information on what teachers do in order to prepare what they

should teach to their students.

Evaluation

This would be a decent source to use because there is a lot of good information in it, although it

does seem a little bias on the fact that there shouldnt be standardized testing. It would help in the

paper when arguing the point that there shouldnt be testing because there is enough information

to use to explain why not. The author of this article is James W Popham, he is a professor at

UCLA Emeritus. There is an email, phone number and address that is provided if someone was

wanting to find more information out about him. He does a great job when writing the article

because he makes it readable to the general public so they are able to understand what all is

going and form their own opinions.

Berger, B. (2013, April 11). Don't Teach to the Test. Retrieved April 10, 2017, from
https://www.usnews.com/opinion/articles/2013/04/11/why-excessive-standardized-testing-is-
causing-american-schools-to-fail

Summary

This article is written to show that standardized testing is not effective. There were 45,000

schools that were failing because of it. The author writes about why this is happening to the

schools. He goes to share that when the program No Child Left Behind was thought out on paper

it was a good idea but after taking effect people are learning fast that it is not the case anymore.

With this program people are not able to see how well someone improved to get where they

needed to be in order to take the test given, they just see the score that a student gets on that test.

In a lot of cases students are jumping from a low level of learning to a higher one in order to

somewhat understand what they are being tested on. He shared how students are learning out of

standardized-test prep books in order to understand what the test will be like. They were no

longer getting a liberal arts education. Most of the kindergartners do not come to school as

prepared as they should be.

Evaluation

This article was written for the general public. It would be a great article to use in a research

paper because the author gives a lot of good informative information about what the students are

having to study, and everything that has to happen in order for students to be prepared for their

tests. The author is Brooke Berger and there is a link that can be clicked on that provides

information about him. There is a bias concept to it of the fact that standardized testing is not

effective anymore.

Retrieved April 10, 2017, from http://www.nytimes.com/1992/10/16/us/study-finds-
standardized-tests-may-hurt-education-efforts.html

Summary

This article is well put together with information stating why standardized testing is not helping

students or teachers. Teachers are having to teach almost everything the same way because they

are pressured so much with the fact that they have to improve their students test scores. He

shares how the test should be changed and there should be many different options of tests. for the

science and math portions of it students should have to be able to come up with a solution to a

problem using science and mathematics to solve it, and not just learn equations and try to

remember which one to use and how to solve it.

Evaluation

This article would be good to use in a research paper because there is a lot of information that is

backed up from studies that show why the tests are not effective. Although there is a lot of good

information in it the article is a little bias in the fact that standardized testing is not effective or

helpful. There are other ideas in it though that suggest what the tests should be changed to. This

article was written for the general public to help provide valid information on why there should

not be testing. The author of this article is Susan Chira. There is not a link that provides

information about her so there is no way to know if she eligible to be writing over this concept

but if someone was to write her name into google there would be plenty of information on her.

The article was written in 1992, this is a great source to use because there is information in here

that is similar to some of the newer articles about this subject. Knowing that there are studies

shown that provide the same information a few years back as they do now should be an eye

opener to the general public.

Writing, and Researching in a Digital World Medium. Retrieved April 10, 2017, from
https://medium.com/reading-writing-in-a-digital-world/genre-piece-1-279e8f927905

Summary

This article gives a lot of information about the test and the history of it. it shares why there is

still standardized testing to this day and the importance of it. There is also a personal story

about a student and how he thinks the testing is not helping him and how he gets frustrated with

it. This article also shares information about what some of the students are losing educationally

when having to prepare for these tests.

Evaluation

This would be a great article to use because it shares how long testing has been around and why

it is still in use to this day. It provides information to the general public about how it is hurting

students and stressing teachers out. The author of this article is Taylor Chrism and there is a link

that provides information about her. The article is fairly new with being written in 2014, the

research for this article was done just a few years back, meaning that it is somewhat up to date.

The only thing that is wrong with this article is that it is a little bias towards the fact that testing

is hurting students. The fact that they put in a personal story really is emotional and will play a

soft spot on people as well.

Retrieved April 11, 2017, from http://msutoday.msu.edu/news/2009/standardized-testing-hurting-
us-education-new-book-contends/

Summary

In this article, the author talks about how there was a man, Yong Zhao, who wrote a book about

the research that was founded about standardized testing. He shares in his book how teachers do

not teach other things in class that arent on the test because their careers depend on whether

their students pass or not. They also do not really teach in fun ways because there is not a lot they

can do to make the learning very fun. What they teach comes straight from a book and they try to

make it as interesting as possible. He explains how Americas education programs are not

changing for the better and are remaining the same and students nor teachers are getting the

credit that they deserve.

Evaluation

This would be a good source to use because if someone needed more information over this

matter they could always find the book and read it. The information that was in this article gave a

lot of important facts about why the testing isnt working. Why teachers do not teach other

subjects, how students do not get credit for the improvements that they do make and instead

judged of their score on the test. The author also suggests other steps that American education

could do to improve and gives examples from what other places are doing. This article was

published in 2009 and was written by Andy Henion. There is a link that is provided to learn more

about who the author is. This article was very useful for the general public as well. The only

downfall to it is that it was bias towards the fact that standardized testing is not helping students

or teachers.

2017, from https://www.thoughtco.com/examining-the-pros-and-cons-of-standardized-testing-

Summary

This article shares information from both sides of standardized testing. It gives information over

the fact that it is helpful and the pros to it but it also lists the cons to the testing for students. It

then goes into detail the pros and cons for teachers, and how their career and income are based

off of how well their students do when it comes to the test. It also shares information over why

some students get held back a year, and it most cases it has to do with the fact that they didnt do

well on the standardized test. If a student were to get held back because of their score they then

shared the negative effect that it would have on them and if it would hurt them more or push

them to do better.

Evaluation

This would be a good article to use in a research paper because it is full with great factual

information from both aspects of the sides when it comes to standardized testing. The author,

Derrick Meador, did a great job when writing this article for the general public. He did not make

it bias at all and supported the pro and con side with facts. He also gave information regarding

the fact that it not only hurts students but teachers as well. The article is also up to date with

being written in 2016, therefore the information is very accurate.

Top 10 Reasons to Oppose Common Core. (n.d.). Retrieved April 11, 2017, from
http://www.freedomworks.org/content/top-10-reasons-oppose-common-core

Summary

This article gives a lot of information about why standardized testing is not a good. It explains

how it is not helpful for parents, students, teachers, taxpayers, and how it violates privacy. It also

shares how students are memorizing what they need to know in order to pass the testing instead

of learning new things. the author suggests that the government should no longer decide what

gets done when it comes to dealing with education because they are making standards that keep

failing.

Evaluation

This would be a good source to use in a paper because it provides information about why the

standardized testing are bad for many people. It also shares why the government shouldnt be

involved in what gets done with education. The author of this article did seem to be a little bias

towards the fact that it is bad though. Her name is Julie Borowski and she published the article in

2013. There was no link or other information that provided information about her so I do not

know if she would be qualified to write over this topic. Although what she wrote was very

informational for the general public

Landry, D. (2006). Teachers (K-5) Perceptions of Student Behaviors during Standardized

Testing. Curriculum and Teaching Dialogue, 29-40.

Summary

This article explains how a study goes to show how students react to the tests and their attitudes

during the test. It provides facts and there were also teachers opinions about their students. Most

of them said that they had to be nurturing than what they usually were in class and that the

classes physical environment changed a lot. They also said that a lot of the students had anxiety

really bad when it came time to take the test.

Evaluation

This would be a good article to use in a research paper because there is a lot good information

about the way students react to tests. There is also information about how the students changed

and how the classroom changed and didnt seem the same. The author of this article is Landry

Deborah, there is a link to click on so anyone can find out more information from him. This was

also written for scholarly people so it has been revised and is logical.
Nieto, S. (2015). Still Teaching in Spite of It All. Educational Leadership 72, no. 6: 54-59.

Academic Search Premier, EBSCOhost.

Summary

This article discusses information about why United States teachers are continuing to teach even

though it is difficult and they do not like teaching for standardized testing. It also provides

information on the impact that testing has in public schools, the importance of literacy, and

teachers advocacy. The impact of the guidelines in the United States is addressed and what it is

all about.

Evaluation

This would be a good article to use because it provides information about teachers and students

and the problems that they have when it comes to standardized testing. The author of this article,

Sonia Nieto, wrote it for scholarly people and she is well qualified to be writing over a topic like

this one. This was also published in 2015 so the information is up to date and is something that is

very reliable.
