Can you count this out?

Kaylie Bayes

Kindergarten/Mathematics

Common Core Standards:

Know number names and the count sequence

Count to tell the number of objects
Compare numbers

Lesson Summary:

In todays lesson students, will use a tablet to count out object that they see on the table. Next the students
will use a computer to tell them if they counted their numbers right. Next they will be using their tablets to
explain via the smart board how they miss counted their number. The next day the students will use a smart
board tablet to write out, from smallest to largest, the most numbers they can think of. The next few times of
class will be to practice writing the names of the numbers and continuing to know more numbers. The last
thing to do is compare each of the students first sets of numbers to their beginning set to see if they increased
any or not.

Estimated Duration:

This lesson will be broken up into 6 class periods of 20 minutes a piece. This will help the students better
understand the topic and if they struggled on the stuff from the day before, we can go over it as a class.

Commentary:

The challenge of this lesson would be to keep the students engaged in the lesson when we are using the tablets.
Also, having them explain the best they can without making it seem like they just typed in a number and did
not count the objects in front of them.

Instructional Procedures:
Day 1:
First 5 minutes will be given to the students to guess the number of objects that or laying on a front table
Next 5 minutes will be to see if their guesses were right or wrong.
The last 10 minutes will be used to have the students explain why they missed counted their objects.
Day 2:

The first 10 minutes the students will be writing their number, the most they know, from smallest to largest.
To end the class the students will focus on writing the numbers out, not names but numbers themselves.

Day 3:
The first 5-10 minutes students will practice the given numbers they receive from teacher on their tablets,
tracing them, saying their names, or writing out the name.
The last 5-10 minutes students will be quizzed on the names of numbers they should already know.

Day 4:
First 5 minutes the students will use their smart board tablets to write out their list of the number they know so
far, smallest to largest.
Last 15 minutes each student will pick- new number names to learn and master.

Day 5:
The whole class the students will be using their tablets to practice their new numbers.

Day 6:
This time period the students will explain if they mastered their 4-5 newly picked numbers or not.

Pre-Assessment:
Prior to the beginning of this lesson, each student will be given a sheet of numbers. Each student is to
label the numbers they already know will a special character. Then use a different sign on the ones they
tend to master from this lesson

Scoring Guidelines:
There really is not a way to score this except to see at the end of the lesson if they met their goals or not.
Post-Assessment:
Once the lesson is complete each student is given 10-15 minutes to write out all the numbers they know from
either before this lesson and/or ones they learned from this lesson.

Scoring Guidelines:
The scoring for the post assessment is basically weather or not their learned from the lesson, if they did
they passed, if not, I asked a helper t reteach them the lesson again.

Differentiated Instructional Support

Like with the post assessment scoring guide, the students who did not learn from the lesson will have a
classroom helper reteach them the lesson and determine if they passed or not.

Homework Options and Home Connections

No homework is given out in this lesson it is mostly in class work

Interdisciplinary Connections
This can be integrated into language arts because I have the students write out htier number in the pre and post
assessments without a tablet.

Materials and Resources:

For teachers Smart board

Copies of number with names- pre assessment
Blank paper- post assessment
smart board tablet
For students Tablet
pencil

Key Vocabulary
Names of numbers

Additional Notes

Ask a classroom helper if they feel comfortable reteaching a lesson to those students who struggled.
