PLANNING, PREPERATION, INSTRUCTION, AND ASSESSMENT
Introduction
Planning, preparation, instruction and assessment are all essential to teaching. To know
what to teach, you must plan the unit, then you must prepare materials and information. Planning
and preparation both help instruction be valuable, and clear. Assessment comes in several forms.
During the unit there will be informal and formal assessments. Some will be as simple as white
board answering questions to see what the students need more help with, sometimes this will
The artifacts that I chose for this section are a math assessment and a counting by 5
activity. I chose the math assessment because this was the starting phase of my planning. I
needed to know what the students already knew before I could plan how I would teach the
lessons. For this assessment, I brought students individually to the back of the classroom to
count by 1s, 5s, and 10s orally. This would also be the final assessment, but I could check to see
if the students could count to 100 several different ways. This assessment proved that the many
of the students needed help counting by 5s. I planned several different kinesthetic activities for
One of the activities were the counting by 5s with the 5 blocks. This bar had 5 different
sections so the student could count each one if they got stuck. The student would roll a dice, and
then count by 5s that many times. They would take the bar and place it on the chart at the right
area as extra visual aids. This was very popular with the students and helped them repetitively
Planning and preparation help the teacher, consider the approach you would like
students to take to their learning in your subject(uts.edu). Planning helps the teacher know
more about the subject, and carefully design the instruction to help every student in the
direction to the classroom. This helps the class be on time with the SOLs as well as making sure
the students will learn everything they need to for the full year.
Instruction must be aligned so that it matches the assessment. Students are more likely
to learn because instruction is focused and because they are assessed on what they are taught.
Teachers are also able to focus, making the best use of their time (eduplace.com). Teachers are
able to plan the instruction so that the students are able to best succeed.
Planning, preparing, instruction, and assessment are all essential to the teaching process.
They all work together to help both the teacher and the students keep working in the right
direction. It helps the teacher stay on track with the sols in the district as well.
