Absence attendance documentation when a student does not report to
school
ACT U.S. college entrance exam that is based on what students learn in
high school; provides personalized information about their strengths for
education and career planning.
Advanced Placement a program created by The College Board, to offer
college-level coursework to high school students
Athletic Eligibility standards that determine whether or not a student
remains qualified to participate in organized sporting events

Bell Schedule set times for the school bells to ring signaling the
transition to/from classes throughout the day

Dress code rules that identify acceptable forms of dress within the school
Drivers Education a formal program that prepares new drivers to
obtain a learners permit or drivers license
Driving Eligibility Certificate endorsement used to very that a
student, under age 18, is meeting academic and enrollment expectations for
the state of North Carolina and may obtain either a limited drivers learner
permit or a provisional (limited or full) drivers license
Drop Out permanently separating from high school prior to completion of
graduation requirements
Dual Enrollment a program that allows students to enroll in college
courses for credit prior to high school graduation
Early Graduation option for students who have completed their
required course of study towards completion of high school credits prior to
the standard four-year term

to a student to meet the need for his/her college expenses
Financial Aid Award Letter a letter from a college/university/trade
school detailing costs and any monies awarded to pay for the costs of
attendance
Foreign Language world language courses outside of the main spoken
and operating language of the school community, often used as an elective
course
Freshman - grade identification signifying students in the 9th grade of
standard high school
Grade Point Average a calculated average of quality points affixed to a
students final letter grade (end of semester grade) for each course in high
school. The scale can span from 0 to 4.0 or 5.0.
Grading Scale state identified scale from 0-100 with affixed point values
that correspond to a students earned course grade.
NEW GRADING SCALE (effective 2015-16 and beyond):
A = 90 to 100 % = 4.0 points
B = 80 to 89% = 3.0 points
C = 70 to 79% = 2.0 points
D = 60 to 69% = 1.0 points
F = 0 - 59% = 0 points

Graduation Marshals students from the junior class who have earned
the required grade point average and class rank, who are invited to
participate in the graduation ceremony
Graduation Project a process facilitating high school students
integration of research, writing, and presentation skills with knowledge
obtained to create a presentation before a community audience
Graduation Rate the percentage of first-time, first-year students who
complete their course of study within four years

NCAA Clearinghouse an organization outside of the NCAA, which
performs academic record evaluations to determine if a prospective student
athlete is eligible to participate at an NCAA Division I or II college as a
freshman student-athlete.
NCHSAA (North Carolina High School Athletic Association) a
voluntary, non-profit corporation which administers the states
interscholastic athletic program
North Carolina Scholars students who complete state-identified
requirements for academically challenging high school programs; students
receive special recognition on their diploma and in the graduation exercises
Out of School Suspension temporary exclusion assigned to a student as
a form of discipline wherein the student is separated from the educational
process
Parking Decal temporary passes that allow individuals to park legally
on campus
Parking Permits registration and permission to park student vehicles in
designated spaces at the school
Period Attendance attendance verification taken during each period of a
students daily schedule
Personal Statement a written description of the students achievements,
interests, etc. and used as a part of an application process
Plagiarism using another persons words or ideas without giving credit
to that person
PLAN pre-ACT test given to students usually in the fall of their

graduating class
SAT entrance exam used by most colleges to make admissions decisions;

optional essay
Schedule a listing of required courses that the student is enrolled in each
semester
Schedule Changes written request to modify the students assigned
courses during the first 10 days of the semester

School Colors colors chosen by a school to represent it on uniforms or
other identification to build morale and foster school spirit
