Philosophy Assessment
Assessment is the process we use to gather information and make decisions about
students learning progress. Many teachers think that this process comes right after the lesson is
taught but that is not the case. Quizzes and test are the most common forms that teachers assess
what the students have learned. Assessments are important because this helps you determine
whether your teaching is effective and if the students are learning what you are teaching. This
also help you as a teacher improve your teaching skills if the students dont do so well during the
assessment. If there wasnt an assessment at the end of the lessons you wouldnt know whether
the students understood not what was being taught. To make assessments effective they need to
be planned carefully, the questions need to be related with the lesson that was taught.
There are different types of assessments, first there is informal assessment which is the
process of gathering information and making decisions during the course of learning activities.
On example of this is when a student seems like he is not paying attention during class so you
call on them to assess whether they were on task or not. Next, there is formal assessment which
is the process of systematically gathering the same kind of information from all the students most
commonly paper and pencil quiz. One example of this would be when a teacher goes through a
lesson and then at the end of the lesson gives a quick five minute quiz to see if the students
understood the lesson. This could be very useful during math. Next there is formative assessment
which is an assessment that is used to monitor learning progress during lessons and units. This an
excellent assessment because it provides feedback for the students and teacher. There is also
summative assessment which is used at the end of the lessons to see is the learning goal was met.
How I will determine whether my students are learning or not is by doing assessments at
the end of the lesson that was taught. I will do this by giving out test, quizzes, homework, group
projects and presentations. I feel like either of those are good ways to determine whether my
teaching goal was reached. This will always be a great way to get back feedback from my
students so that I know what things I can improve on as a teacher. If the assessments are not
passed by the majority of the class I will do the lesson again and just try a different strategy. But
if most of the students pass the assessment I will move on to the next lesson. For those students
who did not pass I will put them into a group and work with them individually when get into
groups or centers.
I want my students to be able to learn as much as possible when they are in my classroom
and I also want them to pass the assessments that are handed out in class. I dont mind work with
them one on one as long as at the end of the day they feel confident and my goal was reached. As
a teacher I will always be looking for ways to improve my lesson plans and assessments so that
my students have the best possible experience with no confusion, even if I have to reteach the
lesson.
