Passage I
[Read the following passage carefully and answer questions 1-10. Use answer book.]
Hamidur Rahman was the man who gave shape to the concept and design of the Shaheed Minar, by
the aspirations of Bangali identity and nationalism. He was the first art student of Bangladesh who in
the 1950s went to Europe and studied at Ecole de Beaux Art in Paris. He was the pioneer of the
new painting movement in the then Pakistan. But he is most remembered for his remarkable design
of the central Shaheed Minar. When Hamidur Rahman was assigned to make the design, he was full
of enthusiasm focusing on the language movement as the central. He wanted to find a new
expression to convey the aspirations of the people. He experimented with basic horizontal and
vertical forms to bring out the concept of his design which provided the manifestation of inner
strength. The four columns on both sides of the central structure reflect the balance and harmony of
a united stand.
The original design had included stained glass, with hundreds of eyes, through which the sunlight
could pass. The marble floor was to reflect the moving shadows of the columns in an unending
process of revolt from dawn to dusk. In the basement of the Minar he had designed a grand fresco
work of 1500 square feet, depicting the language movement. This was to be his masterpiece, again
reflecting the theme of geometric horizontal and vertical motifs of unity and strength.
Passage II
[Read the following passage carefully and then answer Questions 11-20. Use the answer book.]
Alzheimers disease impairs a persons ability to recall memories, both distant memories and
memories as recent as a few hours before. Although there is not yet a cure for the illness, here may
be hope for a cure with a protein called nerve growth factor. The protein is produced by nerve cell in
the same region of the brain where Alzheimers occurs. Based on this relationship, scientist from the
University of Lund in Sweden and the University of California at San Diego designed an experiment
to test whether doses of nerve growth factor could reverse the effects of memory loss caused by
Alzheimers. Using a group of rats with impaired memory, the scientists gave half of the rats doses
of nerve growth factor while giving the other half a blood protein as a placebo, thus creating control
group. At the end of the four-week test, the rats given the nerve growth factor performed equally to
rats with normal memory abilities. While the experiments do not show that nerve growth factor can
stop the general process of deterioration caused by Alzheimers, they do show potential as a means
to show the process significantly.
