denomination basketball. It is also called N basketball. 1 or basketball,
especially in Guatemala, Argentina and Peru, for the Spanish of its original
name in English: basketball.3

It was invented by James Naismith, a Canadian professor of physical education,

in December 1891 at the YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA. It is played
with two teams of five people, during 4 periods or quarters of 10 (FIBA), 4 or 12
minutes each (NBA). At the end of the second quarter, there is a break, usually
15 to 20 minutes according to the rules of the championship to which the party
belongs.

There is also a modality, mainly for the disabled, which is played in a wheelchair
(wheelchair basketball), practically with the same rules as the usual basketball.
Positions of a basketball team

Basketball game at Technological Institute and Higher Studies of Monterrey,

Mexico City Campus.

Within the game of basketball, the following positions are possessed to place
the players:

"Base": Also called playmaker (literally, game creator). Normally the lowest
team player. In attack he raises the ball to the opposite field and directs the
attack game of his equipment, sending the game system. Its recommended
characteristics are good ball handling, game vision, ability to give good passes,
good speed and a successful shot outside. In the bases are appreciated assists
as the points achieved, although a good player must achieve both. In defense
they have to make it difficult to raise the ball of the opponent base, to cover the
pass lines and to be attentive to collect the long rebounds. Usually these
players are not of a high stature, because the really important thing is the
organizational and game management capacity. Known as 1 in the terminology
used by coaches.

"Escort": Player normally lower, faster and agile than the rest, sometimes
excepting the base. He must contribute points to the team, with a good shot
including the three-point shot, a good control of the ball and a great ability to
enter the basket. Known as 2 in the terminology used by coaches.

"Eaves": It is generally an intermediate height between the inner and outer

players. Your game is balanced between strength and shooting. It is an
important position, because of its ability to combine height with speed. In attack
must be a good three-point shooter and know culminating an entry under the
opposing board, are basic pieces in launching counterattack and usually
culminate most of them. Known as 3 in the terminology used by coaches.

"Wing-Pivot": It is a more physical role than the eave, in many cases with a
game very similar to the pivot. It keeps most of the points on the low post,
although some can become very effective shooters. They help the pivot to
prevent the inside game of the opposing team, and close the rebound. Known
as 4 in the terminology used by coaches.
"Pivot": They tend to be the players of greater height of the equipment, and the
more muscular ones. Normally, the pivot must use its height and its power
playing near the rim. A pivot that combines strength with agility is a fundamental
piece for your team. They are the players that surprise the new amateurs, by
their great height. In Europe the center midfielder has evolved more and is able
to open outwards to shoot. In defense they seek to collect the short rebound, to
prevent the inside game of the opposing team and to block the entries of
external players. Known as 5 in the terminology used by coaches.
