o Minimum drive quantity per node pair is 8 SAS SSDs. The minimum applies to each new
drive type included in the array. The 100GB and 200GB SLC SSDs are the same drive type
but 400GB MLC SSD is treated as a different drive type.
o Maximum of 120 SSDs per node pair.
o The SFF and LFF SSDs allow the user to create SSD volumes that stripe across SFF and
LFF enclosures.
Small Form Factor (SFF)-specific configuration practices
o SFF drives may be loaded into the Storage Base enclosures, the Upgrade Node Pair
enclosure and the M6710 drive enclosure.
o SFF drives must be loaded in pairs of identical drives, beginning with the leftmost slot,
slot 0, and filling to the right, leaving no empty slots between drives.

SSD Drive Mixing Rules
The 3PAR StoreServ 7450 since launch has had 6 different types of SSDs 100GB SLC, 200GB SLC, 400GB
MLC, 480GB MLC, 920GB MLC and the 1.92TB cMLC. It is important to understand the configuration
rules regarding mixing of these SSD drives within an array.
Note: The 1.92TB cMLC SSD is only orderable with new factory integrated (CTO) 3PAR StoreServ 7450
systems. These drives are not orderable with field integrated (BTO) 3PAR StoreServ 7450 systems or
as upgrades for existing 3PAR StoreServ 7450 systems. The 1.92TB cMLC SSD will be available as
upgrades for existing systems with the next major release of the HP 3PAR OS. The drive mixing rules in
this guide will be updated at that time.
As a best practice, similar type drives of different capacities must not be mixed within provisioning
groups. Doing so leads to extra capacity getting used up in creating additional spare space capacity. The
basic rule that needs to be remembered is that the spare capacity in minimal setting is equal to the
largest capacity drive of that type (FC, NL, SSD, etc.). A group of 8 x 200GB SSD drives will have a spare
space allocation of 200GB.
Example:
As it can be seen, addition of 4 x 920GB SSDs, increases the spare requirement from 200GB to 920GB.
Therefore, the addition of 4 x 920GB SSDs results in an increase of only 2960GB raw capacity instead of
3680GB. You can avoid allocating additional spares by adding similar capacity drives to the array.
Often times, given the cost of SSDs, such restrictions are difficult to abide by. SSD drive mixing becomes
a necessity and in such cases, the following rules need to be followed while mixing SSDs in a 3PAR 7450
array:
o When adding more SSDs, make sure that the configuration remains balanced.
o Minimums will be a multiple of the set size of the raid configuration.
o Minimum upgrade drive quantity is 4 drives per node pair, or 2 drives per enclosure (counting
enclosures that support the drives form factor), whichever is larger.
o If the same capacity is not available, best to use closest capacity available. Below are the
minimum requirements when mixing capacities based on spare space affects:
Minimum drive
Current Configuration Drive Addition
recommendation per node pair
100GB or 200GB SSDs 100GB or 200GB SSDs 4 (R1) or 8 (R5, 3+1)
100GB or 200GB SSDs 400GB or 480GB SSDs 4 (R1) or 8 (R5, 3+1)
100GB or 200GB SSDs 920GB SSDs 4 (R1) or 8 (R5, 3+1)
7
400GB SSDs 480GB SSDs 4 (R1) or 8 (R5, 3+1)
400GB or 480GB SSDs 920GB SSDs 4 (R1) or 8 (R5, 3+1)
Note: The 480GB SSD is also allowed to be used as a spare replacement for the 400GB SSD under
the above conditions. It is to be noted that 80GB of raw capacity would be lost on the new drive
during such a replacement.
The table below summarizes best practices for Initial Configuration and Upgrade Alternatives for 3PAR
StoreServ 7450 systems.
Note: When nodes are added to the system (e.g., when upgrading from 2 nodes to 4), the best practice
upgrade is to add symmetric number of drive enclosures per node pair.
In order to provide a lower cost entry point, the HP 3PAR StoreServ 7450 supports 2-node and 4-node systems with no
added Drive Enclosures. Addition of enclosures can be done in increments of 1 within permissible limits.
Caution!
With the HP 3PAR architecture it is important to balance the load (i.e., IOPS and/or bandwidth) as
evenly as possible across all available nodes, ports, Drive Enclosures and Drives, as a system
configuration that has nodes with substantially different load may not deliver the full performance of
the hardware.
8
Special Case Configurations
Some unbalanced configurations are permitted.
o While the best practice is to add drives in columns, that is equal number of drives in
all enclosures that support the drive form factor, the system will support configurations
where the full column is not filled. For example, consider a 3PAR StoreServ 7450 2-node
with four (4) add-on Drive Enclosures and 20 100GB SLC SSD drives, arranged as four (4)
drives per enclosure. The user wants to add SLC SSDs but does not need a lot of
capacity. It is permissible to configure eight (8) 100GB SSDs across four of the
enclosures (two (2) in the Base Enclosure and the remaining six (6) configured in pairs in
three Drive Enclosures).
o While the best practice for 4-node configurations is to maintain identical configurations
on each node pair, the system can accommodate unbalanced configurations. It is
recommended that both node pairs have the same types of drives, but the quantity of
drives and number of enclosures can differ if needed. If an asymmetrical configuration
is needed, note that large differences in configurations between the node pairs will
cause performance constraints.
9
Building HP 3PAR StoreServ 7450: Best Practice Configurations Process
3PAR StoreServ 7450 Best Practice configurations can be built through the following 8-step process:
Step Process
1 Calculate number and o Estimate front-end IOPS required by application
type of drives required o Use Storage Optimizer to determine drive quantities and types that
meet the performance requirements and capacity requirements.
http://ent92.sharepoint.hp.com/teams/storage-performance-
tools/default.aspx
o Verify that number of drives will meet capacity requirements (TB).
Capacity requirements should also reflect needs for sparing, etc., -
see Appendix A (Note that the 3PAR StoreServ 7450 systems
default to one spare drive for every 24 drives.)
o Round up drive count to a multiple of 2
o Consider future storage growth
2 Calculate number of o Divide number of SFF drives by 24 to calculate minimum number of
Drive Enclosures 2U SFF enclosures required (2U SFF enclosures include 2U SFF
required Drive Enclosures and controller node enclosures)
o Calculate the number of LFF enclosures (4U in size) required by
dividing the quantity of LFF drives by 24 (LFF drives cant be
installed in the controller node enclosure)
o In most cases, the best practice is to balance drives across
enclosures
o If HA Cage is required, ensure that enough enclosures are included
to permit HA Cage for the RAID levels involved
o If future growth is expected, only partially fill the enclosures
3 Select front end o 4 8Gb/s FC ports are built in per node pair
connectivity options o Consider need for host connectivity and Remote Copy connectivity.
o If necessary, add one optional adapter card per node (four 8 Gbps
FC ports or two 10 Gbps iSCSI/FCoE ports per adapter)
4 Select cables o Select optical cables to connect hosts to Controller Nodes.
o Note that SAS cables used to connect nodes with Drive Enclosures
are included with the enclosures. Normally SAS cables do not need
to be ordered. SBW/Watson will add 6 meter SAS cables if the
configuration requires more than one rack.
o Select 1GbE copper cables if Remote Copy over IP is desired.
5 Select cabinets o If factory integration into an HP rack is selected, SBW/Watson will
automatically configure base and expansion rack(s)
o Field racking into existing 19 inch racks is permitted
6 Add Service Processor o Require 1 Service Processor per system. The Virtual service
processor is provided free. Hardware Service Processor is optional.
7 Select software o HP 3PAR StoreServ 7450 Storage provides software suites to
simplify ordering.
8 Select options for o Select Host Bus Adapters, switches, and cables for connections
storage networking between hosts and storage

HP 3PAR StoreServ 7450: Detailed Configuration by Component
HP 3PAR StoreServ 7450 Base Configuration
The base configuration defines the model for each system. It includes the 2U enclosure(s), two
Controller Nodes per 2U enclosure, and 24 SFF drive slots per 2U enclosure. The 3PAR StoreServ 7450
scales up to four Controller Nodes in two 2U enclosures.
3PAR StoreServ 7450 Controller Nodes are the fundamental building blocks for performance and
connectivity. They are always deployed in pairs (node pairs) in an Active-Active configuration where
the same volume can be exported from all nodes. The number of nodes required is driven by
performance, availability and capacity requirements for the initial configuration and future growth.
11
Each node includes:
2 built-in 8 Gb/s FC ports (labeled FC-1 and FC-2)
2 built in RJ45 ports: 1 GbE for Remote Copy (labeled RC-1), 1 GbE for management (labeled MGMT)
Two 4-lane 6 Gbp/s SAS port for Drive Enclosure connection (labeled DP-1 and DP-2)
Optional HBA (either four 8 Gb/s FC or two 10 Gb/s iSCSI/FCoE)
Controller interconnect (StoreServ 7450 only) (labeled Intr 1 and Intr 2)
Cache Memory
Drive Enclosure configuration affects availability and ease of future upgrade. Highest availability is
achieved with enclosure level HA (HA Cage). Future upgrades are easier when Drive Enclosures are
already in place and the upgrade is simply a matter of adding more drives.

15
Each node in a node pair (a node pair is composed of the two controller nodes in a single 2U
enclosure) must have the same number and type of adapters. FC and iSCSI/FCoE adapters may not
be intermixed in a node pair.
The 4 ports of the FC adapter can be individually configured to connect to a host or to a remote
array in an RC configuration.
The two ports of the iSCSI/FCoE adapter can be individually configured by the user as iSCSI or FCoE.

3PAR StoreServ 7450 Cabinets and Racking
The HP 3PAR StoreServ 7450 is compatible with most industry standard 4-post EIA 19 inch racks with
square mounting holes, including the HP Intelligent Series Rack and the HP 10000 G2 Series Rack. The
HP 3PAR StoreServ 7450 can be factory configured and shipped in a rack or shipped without a rack for
field integration into an existing rack. The rack used for factory integration is the HP Intelligent Series
Rack. When an HP rack is specified in SBW/Watson all required cabinets and accessories for the
configuration will be automatically identified and included by SBW/Watson.
NOTE: Storage Centric and non-Storage Centric Racking for the StoreServ 7450:
Choosing the Storage Centric rack configuration will ensure that the system is racked in the middle and
shipped that way. Only the Physical SP, StoreServ File Controller and default SN switches will be allowed
in this rack. Choose this option for optimum upgradeability and serviceability
With the non-Storage Centric rack configuration, the system will ship with the storage system base will
be placed at the base of the rack with drive enclosures placed above. Choose this option if the StoreServ
7000 is to be racked with other HP EG products (servers, networking switches etc.)

additional drive enclosures in a Storage Centric
Configuration. The diagram on the right shows the same
system in in a non-Storage Centric configuration
NOTE:
The number of components that will fit in a rack varies and is determined by the interior U-
space of the rack.
Expanding the HP 3PAR StoreServ 7450 in to an expansion rack is permitted when the
configuration exceeds the capacity of the primary rack.
One 6 meter SAS expansion cable kit is required for every node pair that must access drive
enclosures in the expansion rack. Each 6 meter SAS expansion cable kit contains four 6 meter
SAS cables.
The controller node enclosures and the drive enclosures include mounting rails that are
compatible with industry standard 4-post EIA 19 inch racks with square mounting holes.

Appendix A
3PAR StoreServ 7450 Storage Systems
On 3PAR StoreServ 7450 Storage, the default for spare space is to ensure 1 Drive worth of space (of the
largest Drive) for every 24 Drives, with a minimum of 1 Drives worth of space assigned to sparing.
In a mixed environment (SLC and MLC SSD), spares are required by Drive type, such that the default
requirement for spare space on mixed systems is the sum of the following two components:
1. If only SLC SSD is included: 1 Drive worth of spare SLC SSD space for every 24 SSDs, with a
minimum of one.
2. If only MLC SSD is included: 1 Drive worth of spare MLC SSD space for every 24 SSDs, with a
minimum of one.
3. If both SLC and MLC are included: 1 Drive worth of spare MLC SSD space (supported MLC SSDs
are larger than SLC SSDs) for every 24 SSDs, with a minimum of one.
