Assessment Scale:

First grade students will identify at least three key ingredients to a compost (worms, moisture,
and decomposing materials).

Subject Matter/Content: Earthworms and composting

Prerequisites:
- Students will have previous knowledge on different types of pollution, recycling,
reusing, and what is biodegradable and non-biodegradable.
- Students will know how to ask questions, create predictions, collect data, and work in
small groups.
Key Vocabulary: on Anchor charts

- Decomposers: worms, insects, and bacteria that eat or breakdown organic
materials.
- Biodegradable: materials that break down naturally in our environment.

earth worms.
- Students will make connections with earthworms and composting.

Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies:

-The teacher will start off the lesson with the book Compost Stew by Mary McKenna Siddals.
-This book provides a review of yesterdays content of whats biodegradable and non-
biodegradable.
-The book will also introduce the concept of composting and whether we use biodegradable
materials or non-biodegradable.
-This book discusses the type of critters that are in a compost such as worms which introduces
the inquiry for today.
-Pass out the foldable worksheet to each student
-Then as a class create an anchor chart of terms for today
- students will glue the terms on their foldable where they believe the definition is using the
anchor chart as a reference.
-walk around the classroom and check students answers and make sure they have the right
terms in the correct spots since they will hold on to list for future reference
