Overview:
This lesson covers heart disease and tertiary prevention. This will be presented to a community
based audience of men and women at the age of forty.
Instructional Objectives:
1. Cognitive
a. Participants will be able to state three symptoms of a heart attack that both a male
and a female experience when asked by the instructor.
b. Participants will be able to state 3 major risk factors of heart disease in a class
activity.
c. Participants will be able to state 3 strategies to maintaining a healthy lifestyle in a
class activity.
Affective
d. Participants will be able to express at least two concerns about their personal
health in a heart disease risk assessment.
Risk factors for heart disease: high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, diabetes, smoking,
overweight or obesity, physically inactive, family history of early heart disease, unhealthy diet,
old age
How to maintain a healthy lifestyle: maintain a healthy weight, dont smoke, eat the correct
serving numbers of fruits and vegetables, exercise regularly, sleep
Instructional Activities:
1)Small Group Gallery Walk Activity (Cognitive Objective #1,2,3) (10 minutes)
In small groups of 5-6, participants will rotate around the room to answer three different
questions about heart disease. Each group will write down their answers on one sheet of
paper and then discuss it with the class. The questions will include: what are symptoms of
heart disease for men and women; what are risk factors for heart disease; and how can
you maintain a healthy lifestyle. Participants will spend 2 minutes at each station and
then have a class discussion.
2) Health Assessment (Affective Objective #1) (5 minutes)
Participants will be given a self-assessment to fill out about themselves and their current
habits. The questions will be based on heart disease and give them a better understanding
to see if they are at risk. After completing the self-assessment, there will be a class
discussion as to why they are concerned.
