Teme Valley Wildlife

One of the best sights in May is the explosion into flower. Meadow buttercups turn bright
of colour as flowering plants cascade into green pastures to shining gold and intense
bloom, creating huge splashes of blue, white, bluebell-blue carpets the woodland floor. Red
pink and yellow in the landscape. Hedges campion adds a shocking bright pink to na-
and roadsides seem suddenly covered in tures palette, blending, as nature does so
white as hawthorn and cow parsley burst well, to please the observers eye.
Artists, too, have been inspired by the
sudden creativity of May. David Hockney,
the Yorkshire-born artist, noticed it in the
land west of Bridlington on the Yorkshire
Wolds. He captured the effect to perfection in
a series of very large canvases showing
hedgerows laden with may-blossom, which
he likened to clotted cream. I saw the paint-
ings at the Royal Academy a few years ago
and I was absolutely transfixed by them. A
fellow exhibition-goer commented that
hedges never look like that, but here in the
Teme valley, as in the Wolds, they certainly
do!
