The Phenomenon of Tsunami

The word tsunami comes from the Japanese language meaning great waves (Tsu: port
and Nami: wave). Definition many people of tsunami is a natural disaster caused a rising sea
waves to the mainland at high speeds due to the earthquake centered under the sea. The quake
could have been caused by landslides, the plates were shifting, volcanic eruptions, and who
experienced meteor that crashed in ocean. This usually happens when the tsunami earthquake
exceeding magnitude 7 on the richer scale. Tsunami is quite dangerous, especially for those who

The occurrence start the earthquake in the ocean. An earthquake in the bowels of the

great wave that moves reaching the mainland. In deep ocean, tsunami waves may appear only a
foot or so high. But as the approach shoreline and enter shallower water they slow down and
begin to grow in energy and height. The waves will reach speeds exceeding 970 km/hour. The
tops of the waves move faster than their bottoms do, which causes them to rise precipitously.

The amount of energy and water contained in a huge tsunami can cause extreme
destruction. When the giant breaking waves of tsunami approach the shoreline, they can destroy
everything in their path. Tsunami waves destroy boats, buildings, bridges, cars, trees, telephone
lines, power lines, and just about anything else in their way. One the biggest and worst effect of a
tsunami is cost to human life because unfortunately escaping a tsunami is nearly impossible.
Hundreds and thousands of people are killed by tsunami. 2004 ago, in Indonesian occurred
tsunami in Aceh province. The tsunami killed over 170.000 people and over 600.000 people in
Aceh lost their livelihoods.

An earthquake is a natural tsunami warning. If you feel a strong quake do not stay in a
place where you are exposed to a tsunami. Go to higher ground. Do not go to the coast to watch
tsunami, as there is very dangerous. Take only essential item that you carry including important
