By
J. L. Fleckenstein

The New York Scarf for Guys cozy, metrosexual style. A slim scarf
with clean, simple lines in an easy to knit, enjoyable to work. Equally at Yarn Info
home out in the country or on city streets, this is a hand knit scarf men
of all ages appreciate and actually wear. Malabrigo
Worsted Merino Yarn
Guys can be difficult creatures at times and for a loving knitter, trying 100% Merino Wool
to come up with a hand knit gift for a guy that he will actually use can 100g / 210 yards
be a challenge. My son is a great example of a guy loved dearly by a (150g /315 yards required
knitter (thats me) but who has very particular taste when it comes to for wider scarf)
things he will wear.
Find this yarn online at:
The first Christmas after I moved to New York from Los Angeles, I JimmyBeansWool.com
wanted to knit a hat and scarf for him that he could (and would) use Size U.S. 6 Knitting Needles
when he came to New York to visit at Christmas. I wanted something
that would suit his style and taste, while also providing some much- Medium Tapestry Needle
needed warmth for the northern, winter climate. If I knit him something
he didnt want to wear, I wasnt going to get very far in helping to keep Blockings Supplies
him warm, now was I?
Love
So, I designed this scarf and the matching hat. The cool thing is, it
worked! He loved both the scarf and the hat and has used them every
time he comes to New York. He has even found opportunities here and
there to use the scarf in Los Angeles in the cold months--whenever they manage to have some of those.

Over the past several years thousands of knitters have visited my blog to pick up this free scarf pattern.
Many hundreds of others have purchased the pattern for the complete set (New York Hat & Scarf which
even includes my personal recipe for double chip cookies I gave to my son along with his hat and scarf
when I first sent them at Christmasguys just love that cookie recipe). There are several hundred
projects posted on Ravelry of the New York Scarf and another couple of hundred of the New York Hat, so
you will find plenty of inspiration and yarn substitution ideas there.

It is very heartwarming to me to know that knitters all over the world have been using my pattern to
make these two items for the guys in their lives and that those guys are actually loving and wearing their
hand knit hats and scarfs and hopefully enjoy the tasty cookies too.

Of course, I also like to tell people who work this pattern about my amazing son, because I love him
dearly and am very proud of him, who he is as a person, his heart and soul, and his accomplishments.

Several years ago he started a graphic design business and opened an Etsy shop to sell his designs
(FlyingJunction.Etsy.com). He creates Typographic Neighborhood City Map Prints & Canvases, vintage-
inspired and very authentic looking subway roll signs and bus scroll prints representing various
neighborhoods in New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles,
London, Paris, Washington D.C., and Atlantic City, and
more.

He has also expanded his line to include vintage-

inspired awesome eyechart prints and minimalist
prints representing various cities as well as
personalized versions of most of his signs. He
collaborated with me on the well-loved Knitters Eye
Charts (you can find them in my Etsy shop
ILiveonaFarm.Etsy.com).

He has worked as a professional artist and graphic

designer for more than fifteen years. His t-shirt
designs (online, in exclusive boutiques, and recently
carried in several Urban Outfitters stores) have been
worn by celebrities around the globe and are
frequently spotted in celebrity photos, television
productions, and music videos.

His prints and canvas signs are inspired by original

subway signs and bus scrolls dating back to the early
1900s. He uses hand-lettering techniques to create authentic, vintage looking reproductions of original
signs and scrolls. He says:

I believe that taking the time and care in my work to come as close
to the originals as possible gives the viewer a more powerful feeling
of connection with the cities and times represented.

Plenty of Love

*I originally knit this set using Plymouth Yarn Suri Merino in a charcoal gray. The color was great, but the
yarn has been discontinued so it is difficult to find. I looked into various yarns to recommend in place of
the Suri Merino, and my favorite is the Malabrigo Worsted Merino. One of the great things about it is that
there is such a great range of wonderful colorways available. I recommend going to Jimmy Beans Wool
online (JimmyBeansWool.com) where you can find the yarn, plus little 15 yard sample balls for only $1.25
so you can test a few colorways if you wish.

If I was going to choose from these colors for my son to knit this set today, I would go with one of these
colorways:

508 Blue Graphite (this would be my first choice)

606 Frost Gray
179 Black Forest
069 Pearl Ten
009 Polar Morn
051 VAA
075 Garden Gate

Yardage: Approximately 210 [314] yards

Gauge: 6 stitches to the inch / 7 rows to the inch on U.S. 6 needles using stockinette stitch

Measurements: Length: Approximately 65 inches / Width: Approximately 5 [7.5] inches after light
blocking

Directions

Cast on 35 [45] stitches.

Rows 1 and 2: Knit.

Row 3: *K3, P2*. Repeat from * to * across row.

Row 4: *K2, P3*. Repeat from * to * across row.

Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until scarf measures approximately 65 inches in length.

Knit 2 more rows.

Bind off.

Finishing

Using the tapestry needle, weave ends of yarn into stitches securely.

Gently block scarf to measure five inches across.

Wrap it up with love and send it to a guy you love to keep him nice and warm ... inside and out.

If you are interested in knitting the matching hat, please visit my Ravelry store and look for the New York
Hat & Scarf knitting pattern. It will include the scarf pattern along with the hat pattern, and that recipe
for scrumptious double chip cookies I mentioned above.

I later designed a pair of knuckle gloves for my son, and that pattern is available also. Look for NY
Knuckle Gloves.
