The use of fillers
The addition of fillers such as silica flour, kaolin, chalk, powdered slates and other
ground minerals not only reduces materials costs, but also effects considerable
improvement of the moulded parts. The important and often specific influence of fillers,
depending on their type, amount and grain size, on the processing properties and
casting performance allow tailoring to special application requirements. The
improvements which can be achieved by the use of fillers are:
reduced shrinkage
exothermic temperature
thermal expansion coefficient
unit manufacturing cost
enhancement of important mechanical properties
of the heat conductivity.
Moreover, the use of materials such as quartz flour as fillers also affords improvements
in the following properties:
Compression strength
Modulus elasticity
Continuous heat resistance (IEC 60216)
Thermal conductivity
Combustion behaviour

Preparation of the filled casting resin system

The fillers to be used should be free of impurities, clean and dry. Humid material must
be thoroughly dried before processing.
The addition levels of fillers generally amount to 60 - 67 % of the total mass. The resin /
filler (or curing agent / accelerator / filler) batch is best produced in the following
manner.
A defined quantity of EPIKOTETM Resin 845 and EPIKURETM Curing Agent 05378 is
charged to the mixer and heated to about 60 - 80 C with constant stirring under
reduced pressure (1 - 5 mbar).
The calculated quantity of the filler is then added with stirring. It is advisable to degas
this mixture by agitation under a vacuum of 1 - 5 mbar until bubbles no longer rise to the
surface.
Slow stirring to avoid sedimentation is recommended, when the mixture is cooled down
to 60 C and blended under vacuum with the pre-evac uated hardener and accelerator.

Conventional Casting
For manufacturing of insulating components, like power transformers, in the middle and
high voltage, casting under vacuum is advantageous. The prepared casting resin
compound is charged under vacuum into a mould heated to 60 - 100 C. The filling
pressure must be about 5 - 10 mbar above the level of vacuum used for resin
preparation (1 - 5 mbar) to prevent formation of gas bubbles due to the vapour pressure
of the components. The casting is then gelled and cured at standard pressure in an
appropriate oven.
Impregnation of glass fibres
For manufacturing of insulating components, like power transformers, in the middle and
high voltage, impregnation under vacuum is important. The prepared coil should be
dried at 80 - 100 C for 8 - 10 hours at 0.2 to 1 m bar.
The filling speed should be 1 - 5 l per minute. It is advisable to fill
the mould from the bottom. The casting is then gelled and cured at standard pressure in
an appropriate oven.

Depending on their size and shape, casting parts are gelled at 80 - 100 C over a period
of 5 - 10 hours, and cured during 12 - 16 h at 100 - 120 C (at least five hours at a
substrate temperature of 120 C).

Physiological Properties Handling Precautions
The handling of chemical materials always requires particular care as it can often have
an irritation or corrosive effect when it comes in contact with the skin or is breathed in
the form of vapours. For this reason it is necessary for employees who come in
contact with chemicals to know the appropriate protective precautions to avoid
unnecessary exposure to danger. Please refer to the MSDS for any specific
precautions related to these products.

This also applies to the processing of the normal commercial epoxy resin and their
hardeners and accelerators.

For information about safe handling of EPIKOTE epoxy resins and EPIKURE Curing
Agents, please note the corresponding Safety Data Sheet.
