Topic: Climate Change
Today we watched a lecture, compiled by Al Gore, on the climate change occurring in the world.
It was a very well-put together lecture, with a plethora of slides and diagrams outlining the issue.
Whats interesting is, although I already knew that climate change is occurring and its taking a
toll on our planet, I sadly never cared to consider it as something that can be so harmful to the
global population. The images in the presentation were quite eye-opening, and it had me really
thinking about the bad situation we have put ourselves into.

It was great to see that some measures are being taken, especially the talks in Paris (Paris
Agreement) that at least instilled some concrete measures to be taken to try and combat the issue.
Additionally, I did some research and have been finding that the ozone layer seems to be on the
route to recovery, after the horrible destruction in the late 20th century.

Hopefully, moving forward, we as a race can start be more vigilant towards our climate, the
project in this class seems to be one key tool to do so.

Topic: Solar Energy Presentation
Today we listened to a presentation by a guest speaker on solar energy, and specifically how it
relates to our particular project. The speaker outlined how we should go about calculating our
energy needs, including calculations in KWh, to figure out how many resources we would need
to meet these requirements.

A big thing I learned is the fact that our structure isn't facing the sun in a way that would allow
for maximum efficiency. This is something we should potentially incorporate in our final design.

Our group was able to exchange contact information to begin sharing ideas and plan out what
were gonna do with the open space. We also must begin to figure out how we will allocate our
funds in order to stay within budget.

Topic: Agriculture Presentation - Keep Growing Detroit

4 types that KGD supports - Family Garden, School Garden, Community Garden (one or more
family gardening together, space is open to public, Market Garden (primary focus is production,
to serve to other families)

KGD is a garden resource program that provides seeds, plants, compost, etc. I believe this will be
a great collaboration to make as it can greatly benefit us when we work on our pavilions.

Topic: Off-Campus Visit - Earthworks Solar Garden

Today our class visited the Earthworks Solar Garden. We got a nice walkthrough of the area with
a few students from UDM architecture school.

It was amazing to see how many different components were in the Garden, from the water
storage units to the structure itself. I have definitely started imagining what our Pavilion may
look like!

Topic: Group Discussions

Our group spent time doing an initial breakdown of what we can have on our site. Currently we
have a few rough ideas, such as making a playground, with a small performance stage. We were
also considering turning the area into a field with possibly a basketball court. Hopefully in the
next few weeks we will have a better idea of what is a more viable option.

Topic: Dan Carmody (Eastern Market talk)

Today Dan Carmody came in and gave a small talk on the Eastern Market. He gave an overview
of how the market operates, and which businesses work there. He explained on how big food
companies lowered the cost of food, which ended up making farmers out of work. At Eastern
Market, they are trying to show that small and medium can compete with large

I believe that this is truly a necessary task that the Eastern Market is trying to accomplish. I also
know that their method is a perfect one, as thousands of people visit the market on a weekly
basis to enjoy the fresh food and environment. Our pavilions may perhaps motivate residents to
link up and sell at the market!

Topic: IOBY presentation w/ Joe Rashid

Today Joe Rashid came in and gave a presentation on IOBY campaigning. He explained that
IOBY is a positive opposite of Nimby. He also defined how IOBY works through crowdfunding,
or lots of small donations going to a single project through an online platform.

It was beneficial to us to receive this talk - now we know how we can gather funding if we do not
win the extra $10k. We should operate on the assumption that we are not going to win it, so if we
do it would be a huge bonus. We also started figuring out a good time to meet after class,
especially when we visit Avalon bakery. We figured Tuesdays after class, 9am fridays, or
Saturday mornings work best.

Topic: Idea Brainstorming for Lots

We sat down and brainstormed different ideas to incorporate into the video for the 10k challenge.
Utilized large paper and presented these ideas in front of class.

Topic: Dianes Video Prep presentation

Diane gave a presentation on how to make a solid video for our marketing purposes. She gave us
an idea of what to emphasize, and how to release it.
As we begin prepping for filming our video next class, this presentation served as great
knowledge.

Topic: Site Visit - Vacant Lot/Avalon Bakery

Today our group visited Avalon Bakery in the early morning, and it was quite a moving
experience. It was amazing to see how many residents were there on a workday-morning. Many
families came in with little kids. We also got a chance to visit our vacant lot, and begin
brainstorming how we would proceed with the cleanup & construction of the site. Lastly, we
filmed some content for the video to submit on the 22nd

2/21/2017
Topic: Audio Recording for Video Submission

With the visual content captured, we dubbed over it with speakers (I was one of them). We were
working on a tight deadline to as the video is due tomorrow! (2/22).

2/23/2017
Topic: Review Submitted Video; Discuss paper requirements
Luckily the video was submitted on time! Now we just have to wait for the results. The rest of
the class time was spent going over the paper that will be submitted in a few weeks.

Topic: Meet with other Communication Directors & Finalize Questions

We had to pause from site planning for a couple classes as were operating on a very tight
schedule to submit this video. We went on and met with our individual role members from other
groups. I served as a communication director, so I met with the other cds, and we finalized a set
of questions that we had in regards to the next steps in planning the pavilions.

Topic: Discussion- Earth Charter Preamble

Today our class read and discussed the Earth Charter Preamble. One particular portion stuck out
to me:

we must realize that when basic needs have been met human development is primarily about
BEING more, not having more

What does this mean? Are our interactions and education systems and experiences enlightening
us to be more or rather stressing the importance for us to have more??
I guess the obvious answer is that we are leaning towards the latter. But I think we are not hitting
a point in our development that has us realizing that maybe its not about having more. But is
that partially superficial? Often people preach on social media, reciting poignant quotations. But
is that what they truly believe? Everything and everyone is connected with everything else.

Topic: Story of Stuff Documentary

Today we watched a documentary on the Story of Stuff. A few major details I that stuck out to
me. We live in a linear system, a finite planet, in which the process consists of extraction,
production, distribution, consumption, and disposal. SO many resources, then why is there
inequality? BECAUSE of this linear system.
Next, we learned about the difference between planned obsolescence and perceived
obsolescence. Both are problems that lead to waste. Planned obsolescence is initiated by the
major corporations, involving making consumers trow away stuff that isn't useful anymore on
purpose - due to a change in quality. Perceived obsolescence involves throwing away stuff that is
still useful to us! Next we learned about the amount of direct normal irradiation, and countries
that have a lot of it, These included Australia, Chile, South Africa, Egypt, all of which can have
huge solar options.

I did, however, do further research and found an MIT article that shows new research on how US
gets enough sunlight as a whole to make its homes go solar!
