Introduction
The purpose of the Desktop VIP File Conversion Utility is to let you
filter and move data to and from the VIP application. You can:
Select the VIPConv option on the Desktop VIP Output menu. The
Conversion Utility window opens, as shown below.
General Procedures
Standard procedures for using the VIP Convert utility are described
here. Procedures specific to each type of import or export are detailed
in the following chapters.
Select Study
Perform the following steps to select the Study (VDB file).
1. Open file selection window. Click the Folder icon located next
to the Study Name selection field as shown below.
2. Select .vdb file. In the File Selection dialog box, filter to the path
and select the .vdb file. Click the Open button.
The selected Study opens. The name displays in the Study Name
selection field. The first Case associated with the Study displays in
the field.
Select Case
Study and Case selection fields are available on every panel. Perform
one of these three steps to select from multiple cases.
Select from the Case menu. Click the pull-down menu located
next to the Case Name selection field in the Case Options panel.
Select the Case from the menu.
Select from list display. When you select a Study, a list of all
recently selected Cases within that Study displays as shown below.
All classes with existing data are listed beside each Case name.
Click on the Case to select.
Enter Case name. Click in the entry field and enter the case name.
Refer to the illustration above. Click the icon to close a branch of the
Options list. Click the icon to open a branch of the Options List.
Click on the icon or option name in the list to select it. The associated
export or import panel opens in the right pane of the window.
Select All Click ALL, which is the top line in each list.
Select/deselect a single Click on line to select. Selected line is high-
line lighted. Click again on highlighted line to
deselect.
Select/deselect CTRL/click on line(s) to select. Selected
multiple line(s) are highlighted. Click again on high-
(non-consecutive) lines lighted line to deselect.
Select/deselect range SHIFT/click on first and last line in selection
(consecutive) lines range. All lines within the range are high-
lighted. SHIFT/click on first and last line
within highlighted range to deselect.
When you are exporting data, additional panels will open if you must
provide more information. Otherwise, the export begins immediately.
When you are importing data, any fields for information you must
provide are on the initial panel. Otherwise, the import begins
immediately.
If the panel does not have a View button, click the right mouse button
in the file name entry field. An Edit -> pop-up menu will open,
displaying all the exported files in the current directory. Select the file
to view or edit in the pop-up menu as shown below
.
You can view the file, or use the standard WordPad edit functions to
make changes. (Refer to WordPad online help.) If the exported file is in
binary format, the view option is not present in the export window.
View VDB
You can view the VDB as a spreadsheet using the View tab as shown
below.

1. Open View tab. Click the View tab located at the bottom corner of
the window. The View panel opens.
2. Select data to view. When you first open the View options tree,
only the Model and Case folders display as shown on the left in the
illustration below. Click the icon to open a branch of the
Options List. Click the icon to close a branch of the Options list.

VIPConvert menu options (with associated toolbar icons) are described
below.
File Menu
Open Study. Lets you open a new Study.
Close Study. Closes the most recent Study and opens the one
selected from the Desktop-VIP main menu.
View Files.Lets you open a file in your default text editor for
viewing or editing.
Edit Menu
These standard Cut , Copy , and Paste functions provide
short-cuts for entering information in entry fields.
1. Open panel. Select the Spreadsheet option under the Export Map
Data branch of the VIP Convert options tree. The Export a Map
Spreadsheet file from a vdb File panel opens.
Note that all available grids are selected by default in the first
column. The second column lists the grid name. The grid block
range (in the I, J, and K direction) is shown in the next three
columns. For recurrent data, the final two columns list the Time
Steps and Properties.
Note also that the Class Types with data available for export are
active, while those without available data are inactive (greyed out).
In the illustration below, only initialization (INIT) and recurrent
(RECUR) data is available.
3. Select class type to filter. Click the Class Type radio button to
select the class for which you want to filter the data.
The grid list reflects the selected class.
4. Deselect grids. Click in the first column within the Grid List as
shown below to deactivate (uncheck) any grids for which you do
not want data included in the export.

7. Apply time steps and properties to all grids. In the Timestep and
Properties Selection List, click to activate the Apply to All Grids
option if you want your selections applied to all grids selected in
the Grid List at the time you export. Otherwise, the selections will
be applied only to the current grid.
8. Select the class type to export. Data for each class must be
exported in a separate file. Click the Class Type radio button to
select the class to export.
9. Define spreadsheet path and filename. The default path for the
spreadsheet is your current directory. The default file name is
<studyname>_<casename>_<classtype>.txt. The default file name
for recurrent data in a Study and Case named Dome would be
dome_dome_recur.txt.
If you want to change the path or name, click the Folder icon
located next to the Export Selected Data to File selection field.
Filter and select the file to export. Click the Open button to accept
the selected path or name.
10. Export. Click the Export Selected Data to File button as shown
below.
11. Repeat the export steps for all classes you want to export.
1. Open panel. Select the GridGenr option under the Export Map
Data branch of the VIP Convert options tree. The Export a
GridGenr GTF file panel opens.

4. Select property range. Click the Property toggle at the top of the
window and select whether to export all properties (ALL) or only
those that conform to the previous GTF export option (GridGenr).
5. Select the class type to export. Data for each class must be
exported in a separate file. Click the Class Type radio button to
select the class to export.
6. Define file path and filename. The default path for the spreadsheet
is your current directory. The default file name is
<studyname>_<casename>_<classtype>.gtf. The default file
name for a recurrent data for a Study and Case named Dome
would be dome_dome_recur.gtf.
If you want to change the .gtf file path or name, click the Folder
icon located next to the Export Selected Data to File
selection field to open the File Selection dialog box. Filter and
select the file to export.
8. Repeat the export steps for all classes you want to export.
LGR Format
Perform the following steps to export data map data to Z-Map format.
1. Open panel. Select the Z-Map option under the Export Map
Data branch of the VIP Convert options tree. The Export a Z-Map
file from a vdb File panel opens.
A row is shown for each available class. The range of layers, time
steps, and properties for each class is shown.
3. Deselect classes. Click in the first column within the Grid List as
shown below to deactivate (uncheck) any classes for which you do
not want data included in the export.

4. Filter layers. Click the Select Layers button located at the top of
the panel. The Layers selection list opens.
5. Apply layers to classes. In the Layers selection list, click the radio
button at the bottom of the list to activate the class your layer
selections are to be applied to. Each available class is listed, as is
the option to apply to all classes.
8. Define export file path and filename. The default path for the
output is your current directory. The default root file name is
<studyname>_<casename>.dat. You can click in the entry field
and enter a new path and/or root file name.

Anchor your cursor in the output file name field and click the right
mouse button to view the contents of the Z-MAP files.
Perform the following steps to export map data from a VDB file.
1. Open panel. Select the Map option under the Export Map Data
branch of the VIP Convert options tree. The Export a Map file
from a vdb File panel opens.
2. Define export file path and filename. The default path for the
output is your current directory. The default file name is
<studyname>_<casename>.map. You can click in the entry field
and enter a different path and/or a new file name.

Anchor your cursor in the output file name field and click the right
mouse button to view the contents of the Z-MAP files.
Perform the following steps to export map data from a VDB file.
1. Open panel. Select the VIP Core option under the Export Map
Data branch of the VIP Convert options tree. The Export Core
Filepanel opens.
3. Select properties to export. Click the Class tabs and select the
properties to export. Click to activate the individual toggles, or
click the Check All button. Note that, for recurrent data, you must
click the pull-down menu located next to each property and
select the timestep to export.
INIT Class RECUR Class CALC Class
For any Class you do not want to export, click and deactivate the
Write to Core File toggle . Selected data will be
ignored on export.
4. Select files to export. When all the data to export has been selected,
click the File Option tab. The file options pane opens as shown
below. By default, all file types are selected for export.
You can:
Click the Folder icon located next to the File Root Name
field. The File Selection dialog box opens to let you change the
export directory path and/or filename for the exported files
from the default of the current directory with the filename of
<study_name>_<case_name>.
5. Export the data. Click the Export button located at the bottom of
the dialog box. The specified files are exported to the selected
directory.
Export Anytime
There is an Export button located at the bottom of each tab. You can export
at any time. When you click the Export button, all selected data on all
panels is exported.
Export RESCUE
This option lets you export property and geocellular grid information
from the VDB file into the industry standard RESCUE (Reservoir
Characterization using Epicentres) format.
1. Open panel. Select the VIP Core option under the Export Map
Data branch of the VIP Convert options tree. The Export Core
Files from a VDB File panel opens.
5. Specify export file format. Click the Binary and ASCII button to
specify the output format. The binary file extension is .bin. The
text file extension is .txt.
6. Export the data. Click the Export button located at the bottom of
the dialog box. The specified files are exported to the selected
directory.

When you click the Export button, all selected data for all classes is
exported.
3. Deselect classes (data types). Click in the first column on the list
as shown below to deactivate (uncheck) any classes of production
data you do not want to include in the export.

<studyname>_<casename>_gss.txt.
Export PA Spreadsheet
This option is used to export monthly/yearly production averages. (The
export to generic spreadsheet option lets you export raw production
data.)
2. Define export file path and filename. The default path for the
spreadsheet is your current directory. The default file name is
<studyname>_<casename>. You can click in the entry field and
enter a new path and/or file name.
Export Plot
This option is used to export plot data from a VDB file as a text file that
can be imported in binary format back into the VDB using the VIP
Map/Plot option under the Import to VDB branch of the option tree.
1. Select the Plot option under the Export Production Data branch
of the VIP Convert options tree. The Export a Plot file from a vdb
File panel opens.
2. Define export file path and filename. The default path for the
spreadsheet is your current directory. The default file name is
<studyname>_<casename>.plt. You can click in the entry field
and enter a new path and/or file name.
Export Observed
This option lets you export an observed data file in a text format that
can be used as an include file for history matching in another
simulation run.
2. Define export file path and filename. The default path for the plot
file is your current directory. The default file name is
<studyname>_<casename>.obs. You can click in the entry field
and enter a new path and/or file name.
Export to OpenWorks
This option is used to export plot data from the VDB file to
OpenWorks. Cumulative oil/water/gas production and water/gas
injection tables are exported.
Import to VDB
Each import panel lets you specify a file to import into a VDB for a
current VIP study.
Import Map/Plot
This option is used to import back into the VDB plot and map data that
was exported using the VIP Convert Export options.
Perform the following steps to import separator file map or plot data.
1. Select the VIP Map/Plot option under the Import to VDB branch
of the VIP Convert options tree. The Import a VDB file from VIP
Map/Plot panel opens.
Select the import Study. Filter and select the Study in which to
import or enter the Study name in the entry field. The selected
Study name displays in the Study Name field. Cases for the
selected Study display in the Case Name list.
Select the import Case. Click on the case to select in the list or
select the Case from the pull-down menu or enter the Case
name in the entry field. The selected Case displays in the Case
Name field.
3. Select files to import. On the Right side of the panel, click the
Folder icon located next to the Plot File selection field. The
File Selection dialog box opens.
Select Plot File. Filter to the map or plot file that was exported
from the VDB file. If you are importing a plot file, note that you
can also import an edited Plot Observation (history matching) File.
Select the import Study. Filter and select the Study in which to
import. The selected Study name displays in the Study Name field.

Select the import Case. Click on the case to select in the list or
select the Case from the pull-down menu. The selected Case
displays in the Case Name field.
3. Select files to import. On the Right side of the panel, click the
Folder icon located next to the Grid, Init, and UNRST File
selection fields. For each, the File Selection dialog box opens.
Filter and select the grid file, init file, and UNRST file(s) to import
from Eclipse.
4. Specify the file type. Click the button beside each file type to
specify the format of the import file: FORM (formatted) or BIN
(Binary).
1. Open panel. Select the RESCUE Model option under the Import
to VDB branch of the VIP Convert options tree. The Import to a
VDB from a RESCUE Model panel opens.
5. Map the properties. Click the beside the VIP property group
and select the corresponding RESCUE property to map.
Click the check box beside each property you want to import. Your
selections will be imported as user-defined properties.
7. Import the properties. When all the selections have been made,
click the Import button located at the bottom of either
panel. The properties import into the specified VDB.
