Ruh-Nafs-Body

I would like to add more to the discussion as I feel spiritualism is almost a lost art in Shiite Islam.
Many of us are entangled in a faith which, if they do not nurture, can be quite lacking. I feel if
anybody will read the various techniques I have put forward with understanding and apply these
in their life, he will be a much different person. I beg Maula Imam e Zaman ajtfs, to help us all with
a better understanding of this beautiful faith.

The human being is composed of three essential components, these are; Ruh, Nafs and Body.
Let us very briefly try to understand all these three:

RUH (Soul, Spirit):

In the Holy Quran it is very briefly described as ?Min Amr e Rabbi.?

Al-Asra 85 says, ?They ask you about Ruh, tell them it is from the Amr of my Rabb, and you
(mankind) have been given no knowledge about it but a little?

Therefore, we must believe that whatever we have been told about Ruh is only a small portion of
its totality.

Maula Ameer e Kainat [sua] has classified Ruh into 5 types while discussing other creations, and
some additional types while explaining their Holy Selves. [suaj]

In Nehj ul Asrar on page 46, following has been quoted from Kafi V-2, P282 under the title ?Types
of Ruh?

?For Prophets who are a group of sabiqeen (forerunners), there are five spirits;

1)the holy spirit (Ruh al-Quds) who obtains knowledge for them and because of whom they can
carry the repository of prophesy

2) the spirit of faith (Ruh al-Eemaan) through which they have faith, fear of the Lord and justice

3) the spirit of strength (Ruh al-quwwa) through which they can expend effort in obedience to
Allah

4) the spirit of longing (ruh al-shawah) through which they desire to serve Allah and satisfy their
natural needs

5) the spirit of movement (ruh al-Badan) or the spirit of life which allows them to move (The
Prophet [saaw] and the Aimmah [asws] are attributed as having ruh al-madraj or ruh al-hayat in
other hadith)
Prophets were descended with Rooh ul Quds and it was this which helped them to understand
things. With Rooh ul Imaan they worshipped Allah[jj] and abstained from Shirk. With Ruh ul
Quwwa they peformed jihad against their enemies and strived for essentials of livelihood. With
Ruh al-Shawah they enjoyed food and did nikah e halal with young females. With Ruh ul Badan
they used to move around.

The last four types are also found in the Momins who are also called as Ashab e Yameen
(companions of Ali (sua) and the last Three can possibly be found in Kafirs who are also called as
Ashab e Shimal."

Properties of Ruh ul Quds: In different ahadith in Alkafi different properties of Ruh al Quds have
been described. These are;

* It does not sleep.

* It does not become ignorant

* It does not annihilate.

* It does not indulge in lahw e la?b (amusement, playing games? usually associated with things
which would take one away from Ibadah)

* It understands whatever is from under the Arsh till lowest under the earth.

* It protects from Hadasan (all types of nijasat that necessitates wudu or ghusl). Pl keep it in mind
that a simple Prophet can not get najis, let alone the Family of Infallibles sua aj.

* Enables Them [as] to Liqa (encounter) Allah.

* Acts as a station for the nuzool (decent) of Wahi (revelation).

* Does not let nafs die, till They [as] have Their [as] rizq complete. (This explains why Imam [sua]
was not killed when He [sua] was poisoned 16 times and why the 17th poisoning was resultant in
death)

In another narration in Al-Kafi, someone asked Maula Ameer ul Momineen[sua], ?Is Ruh not
Gabriel [a.s]??

Maula [sua] said, ?Gabriel is amongst the angels and ruh is non-Gabriel? Maula [sua] repeated
this sentence.

The person said, what you are saying is too big. There is none who believes that ruh is something
other than Gabriel [as]

Maula [sua] said, ?You are a deviant and are quoting from deviants. Allah [swt] said to holiest of
Prophets [sAaww] that the Amr of Allah [jj] has arrived and tell the people not to become
impatient; Allah [jj] is far above having a partner, HE [swt] descends angels along with Ruh which
is from amongst al-Amr, upon the One?s [as] from his slaves whom Allah [jj] wants?

SOME OTHER TYPES OF RUH:

There are some other types of Ruh that pertain to 14 Holy Infallibles and have not been described
in the above said Hadith. These have been narrated at many other places, I quote just two.

Ref: Behr ul Maarif p351, Nehj ul Asrar p 30.. Abu Hamza Thimali quotes Maula Ameer e Kainat
sua.
"?No doubt Allah jj is Wahid and Ahad and is unique and solitary in oneness. HE jj spoke a
sentence which was all Noor. From this Noor the Holiest of the Prophets [saaw], Myself [sua] and
my Holy Progeny (sua aj) were made. Then another sentence was spoken which was all Rooh.
Then this Rooh was stationed in our bodies. Hence we are Kalimatullah and Ruhullah.?

At another place it is narrated by Maula Wali e Najaf sua, ?And I have been strengthened by Ruh
ul Azamah?

These additional types of Ruh (ruh al-hujjah and ruh al-azamah) establish the supremacy of the
Holiest of the Prophets and his Holy Progeny (sua.aj) over all other Prophets (as). It is also
confirmed by the famous Hadith that all Prophets were created from the perspiration drops of this
Noor e Awwal sAaww.

Much can be written about the qualities of these types of Ruh but I have just quote two references
from the famous Hadith e Noorani by Maula Ameer e Kainat ( Behr ul Maarif, Nehjul Asrar).

?O Salman [ra]! Allah swt said that HE swt connects with any of his Slaves he likes, through his
Ruh. And this Ruh is not given to anybody but to the One who is blessed with Amr and Might.
That?s why I can alive the dead, and know what is in the skies and the earth and I am Kitab e
Mubeen.?

?O Salman [ra]! Muhammad (sAaww) is the one to establish Hujjat and I am the Hujjat of Allah jj
over all the creations. That was the reason that the Ruh ascended up the skies along with HIM
(sAaww.)?

I have tried to be extremely brief in explaining the basic concepts about Ruh.

BODY:

Now we describe Body very briefly. It is a balanced combination of different tissues which perform
different actions to complete a single functioning unit, the single Human Being. We need not to
discuss much to explain body as this visible part of human being has been very thoroughly
elaborated in books of Anatomy and Physiology. We all observe that this body is functional as
long as it is alive. It stops functioning just after the soul departs. So it is actually the soul that
works out of this instrument.

Just think for an example. You have different electronics at your home. Every instrument has a
different fuction and purpose. One unit is to provide cooling while another is to provide heat and is
to cook food, etc etc. All these work only when they are supplied with current. Current is invisible.
But when it gets connected with an instrument designed to use that current, it proves its
existance.

So body is the instrument through which the invisible rooh proves its existance and capabilities.

NAFS:

Like the soul, this is also a non-material thing and is beyond the range of human senses. Let me
give you two examples before going into function etc.

1) You have two concrete slabs of the same size and shape say 110 sq feet each. You can not
call these two slabs a room. To convert these to a room, you need to construct walls or pillars in
between these two slabs. Or; you have a room but you remove the walls or pillars between the
floor and the roof. The room will not exist. Same is the role of Nafs in the human body. It is like
walls connecting the floor and the roof; Nafs connects The Soul and The Body.
2) Consider you have two things, water and fire. Water is cold and fire is hot. You want to transfer
the heat of fire in water. But you can not directly combine these two as they are not compatible
with each other. Whosoever is more in quantum will finish the lesser one. To achieve your
objective of heating water you use a pot. Water is put in the pot and the pot is placed on the fire.
The pot receives the heat from the fire and transfers it to water. The greater the conductivity of
the pot, the faster the water will receive the heat from the fire. The Pot is like the role of nafs in
our selves.

Ruh is absolutely Lateef (subtle, light) while body is absolutely Kathif (heavy and dark). Similar to
fire and water, they are not compatible, it is necessary for there to be something in between so
that the qualities of life (growth, movement, reproduction etc) are transferred from Ruh into the
body. This linking structure is Nafs.

When Almighty wants to kill a human being, the nafs is turned dead; ruh gets free and separated
from the body. From this one can understand the philosophy of the ayat ?Kullo nafsin zaiqatil
maut? (Every self shall have a taste of death) (see; 3:185, 21:35, 29:57)

Nafs is not just a linkage, but it has its own function as well. It is the centre of desires, emotions
and feelings. These desires, emotions and feelings have a direct effect on the conductivity of
nafs. That is why we find in Holy Quran lot many verses promoting the importance of purity of
nafs. Almighty assigns his messengers to promote Tazkia of Nafs (cleanliness of spirit) only for
the reason that this tazkia (cleanliness) increases the conduction of the qualities and properties
contained in the sole and human body gets a better utility.

In many ahadith, we see that a limiting of desires is promoted. Long desires are not liked by
Aaimma Tahireen [sua aj]. Why? Because these desires reduce the conductivity of nafs, the ill
desires also do the same. Tazkiat boosts the conduction of the properties and quality of ruh into
the body.

Now let us understand what are Riazat? Riazat are the procedures that help in two ways. Firstly
these increase the receptivity of body, secondly these help in eliminating the impurities from nafs.

Those who want to know more about Nafs, please refer to Nehj ul Asrar and the famous Hadith of
Maula Ameer e Kainat sua whereby Maula sua described to Kumail [ra] the four types of nafs,
every type having 5 classes and every class having two sub classes.

Some CONCLUSIONS:

From the types of ruh we have studied, we can classify the creation in to six groups:

Stones have one type of ruh, Ruh al Quwwa which gives them strength.

Plants have two arwah (plural for ruh); Ruh ul Quwwa and Ruh ul Shawah, which give them
strength and power of reproduction.

Animals and Kafirs have three arwah; Ruh ul Quwa, Ruh al Shawah, and Ruh ul Madraj, which
enable them to have strength, power to reproduce and energy and organs to move. In Holy
Quran there are many ayaat where some people have been graded like animals or even worse
than those. (Sura Juma)

Momin have four arwah; Ruh ul quwa, Ruh al-Shawah, Ruh al-Madraj and Ruh al-Eemaan. With
this 4th ruh, a momin can differentiate between haq and batil. This 4th ruh is not by birth but it is
attained by accepting the divine leadership. Remember! Acceptance of divine leadership is
reflected through ones actions and not by claims. Those who claim that the have accepted the
divine leadership but act otherwise are not momins but rather they are munafiqs.
In Nehj min Balaghatil Imam Al-Sadiq; Maula [sua] said; The soul of a momin is created from a
soul which is so close to the Almighty soul as the rays are close to the sun.

Prophets [as] have a fifth ruh as well i.e., Ruh al-Quds. Its qualities have been written above.

How can a human being with three arwah come close to the Holy Family of Infallibles sua aj who
are far above that of even the Prophets [as]?

A momin, though he/she may look like a kafir physically, is quite different from a kafir. Momineen
contain 4 arwah while a kafir has three. How can one say that Masumeen sua aj are absolutely
like human beings while none of us knows the Holy Structure they have. Just try to visualize a
personality whose;

> Rooh is Rooh Ullah

> Nafs is Nafs Ullah

> Body is jumb Ullah

A man knows very little about his own ruh, just a bit about his own nafs, and despite hundreds of
thousands books and research articles written (published or unpublished) on his body but still
many many points remaining unknown to him. How can he even think that he knows the
personalities with Ruh Ullah, Nafs Ullah and Jumb Ullah? Those sua aj who have been described
as secrets of Allah jj.

That?s why Urafa say that peak of human knowledge is that he discovers his own ignorance. He
understands the reality that he does not even begin to understand any portion of the oceans of
knowledge.

SPIRITUALISM is the knowledge that explains the methods to increase the capacity and utility of
the body.

It does not create any thing new, rather it tries to maximize the strengths and powers built in the
structure of a Momin. Kafirs and Munafiqs also perform spiritual exercises but they remain of the
armies of jahl as they are devoid of Ruh e Imaan.

You may do any spiritual exercise in this era of Ghaibat, but nothing matches dua e Tajeel as
salwat e Kamila. Keep reciting as much as you can. The figure of 313 is valuable. Here is the
wording:

Ya Rubba Muhammadinw wa Aal e Muhammad, Swalle ela Muhammadinw wa Aal e Muhammad,

wa ajjil faraja Aal e Muhammad.

Very Interesting. Just after posting, I felt that I need to change the font size of the arabic text. It
took me few minutes to do that and when I reposted the article, there was your reply already
posted. This confirms that you even did not bother to read. Just threw your concepts.

Pl quote any ayat or hadith to support your ideas. I shall be greatful.

Soul receives from soul that knowledge, therefore not by book

nor from tongue.

If knowledge of mysteries come after emptiness of mind, that is

illumination of heart.

Dear Abu Fatima!

We have diffrent Schools of thought among spiritualists. Every one has his own logics.

As per holy quran, 45:4 every animal on the earth is an ayat (in the meanings of symbol). So
nothing to feel proud that only you are ayat, every animal is an ayat so you are also one of them.

But when we use word ayat as a ref we mean an ayat from Holy Quran.
