I WASBE International

Composition Contest

Introduction

The I WASBE International Composition Contest is an action of WASBE open for composers around the
world.

The main idea is to encourage young and experienced composers to write original compositions of high
artistic merit, which would have direct connection with symphonic bands present in the field of
Education and Community.

Having such a wide network, WASBE will also promote the participants and winners, organizing
performances on all continents, with WASBE members, band directors and ensembles.

With the International Composition Contest, WASBE also wants to connect composers, band directors,
performances, the promotion of the concerts on the internet and publishers interested in the new
repertoire, in short, to close the circle of producing, performing and promoting all participants on the
event.

1. Objectives

a) encourage composers to write new music of high artist level, considering the presence of the
ensembles in all fields of modern life;
b) encourage composers to look at the wind music, style and form, in its different strands;
c) promote a close connection between composers and band directors;
d) promote a relationship between all the musicians and professionals, related to creating and
performing music, of various cultures and traditions;
e) implementing the closing of the circle of new compositions, performances and publications;
f) promote the full exchange of music cultures through its main agents.

2. Categories

2.1. Education:

belonging to the symphonic standard instrumentation.

Note: It is recommended that composers would be familiar with the musical language and tradition of
the category applied and with the grading system, suggested here is the American Band College Music
Grading Chart by Dr. Cynthia Hutton.

2.5. A qualifying composition should be original and unpublished, the composer is free to write a
composition, according to the categories specified below, and independent of any music compromise.
The composition submitted can have participated on other contest, but not have received the first
prize.

2.6. Composition can be written in various movements as long as it does not exceed the duration
established in the categories below.

2.7. All submitted compositions should be sent with a written note of a maximum of 20 lines, where the
composer explains his/her work and the musical material used.

2.8. Compositions with solo instruments will not be accepted, such as concertos, concertinos, etc.

3. Applications

3.1. Applications should be sent to Mr. Markus Mauderer to the WASBE Office - email
wasbeoffice@gmail.com.

3.2. It is required to apply:

a) Application form filled out with the following information:


-first name and surname of the composer
-date and place of birth
-nationality and passport
-address, telephone number and e-mail
-title and duration of the composition
-category applied
-brief commentary about the composition
-composers CV and photo
-declaration that the submitted work has not been published before and is original
-proof of payment of USD 20.00 (American Dollars) to WASBE, per score

b) 1 (one) copy of the composition in full score digitalized in PDF format. Manuscripts are not accepted.
c) 1 (one) copy in MP3 of good quality recording of the instruments indicated in the score, human
recordings are always preferred, if this is not the case, a good electronic one, utilizing high-quality
acoustic instrument samples is accepted.

d) Copy in PDF of the passport or related ID.

3.3. For each score, a fee of USD 20.00 is charged. There is no limit of applying scores according to the
categories detailed in item 2.

4. Resolutions

4.1. Entering the competition means that each participant agrees to the above rules.
4.2. Scores not fulfilling requirements defined by the rules will not be accepted.
4.3. Composers selected after the eliminatory stage are obliged to prepare all the performance materials
and send them until April 1st, 2017, in PDF to the email address of the contest.

4.4. The organizer of the competition reserves the right to introduce some changes in the course of the
competition if unpredicted circumstances or random incidents occur or if it is impossible to
continue the competition in the established course of action.
4.5. The organizer reserves the right to process personal data of the participants in connection with the
organization of the competition.
4.6. The contest is not responsible for any mistake or misprints on the score and parts of the selected
compositions.

5. The Contest will take place in 2 phases:

5.1. Eliminatory. In this stage 5 (five) compositions of each category will be selected, these will enter
the finals. The deadline for submitting the composition is March 1st, 2017.

5.2. Finals: This stage will take place during a live concert at the Utrecht International WASBE
Conference on .July, 2017, and with the presence of the jury established by the Board Members of
WASBE.

5.3. A list of selected compositions in the first phase will be available on the WASBE website
(www.wasbe.org). It is the full responsibility of the composers to follow the information available on the
WASBE website.

6. Prizes

6.1. WASBE will organize concerts on all continents for the first 3 (three) compositions classified in the
final stage, in Utrecht. The ensembles belonging to WASBE, will perform the compositions in a special
World Event, promoting the winners to the world, as well as interviews with the composers for the
WASBE YouTube channel and also with band directors and musicians about the compositions. With this
action WASBE will exercise one of the most important goals, Promoting the new repertoire for wind
and percussion instruments all around the world.

6.2. WASBE will charge a symbolic fee of USD 20.00 (American Dollars) for each ensemble that will
receive the material; WASBE will retain USD 10.00 and will return USD 10.00 to the composers.

6.3. WASBE will call all the publishers with the purpose to find publishers interested in the new
repertoires.

6.4. On the Finals is no tie.

6.5. WASBE will issue a Certificate of Participation for all the participants.

6.6. The jury reserves the right of not attributing any of the prizes on the finals, if the judging committee
finds that some of the compositions do not have the necessary artistic and technical level to be among
the first 3 winners.

7. Jury

7.1. The jury will consist of WASBE Board Members and with the participation of former presidents, a
group of high qualified professionals.

7.2. The WASBE president will be also the president of the jury, which will be in charge of all the
procedures and will ensure the autonomy and fulfillment on the voting process.

7.3. All the decisions of the jury will be unappealable

7.4. The eliminatory phase will organize 4 commissions within the Board Members and participating
former presidents to select the composition for the finals

4 - Do not forget that the score should only bear the ARTISTIC NAME.
