Josh Guastella - Student Teacher

World History
April 19, 2017

The observer entered the room to see Josh Guastella questioning the class regarding "propaganda". He
was asking questions which related to the concept of propaganda, what it was, its uses, and the psychology
behind it. Students would contribute opinions which Josh would use to direct his next line of questioning.
After he introduced the topic through some discussion with the class he directed students attention to the
front of the room and told the class that they would be discussing 8 different techniques used in
propaganda. As students viewed the power point, the particular technique and a definition was provided via
power point. There was also a visual example provided, and an explanation provided by Mr. Guastella. He
would then question the class and challenge them to figure out how the technique might persuaded people
to help with the war effort.
Following each example an activity was distributed wherein students would work in partners to examine a
piece of propaganda and answer a series of questions based on their current understanding of propaganda.
They were then asked to use a post it note to choose between 6 examples of propaganda displayed on the
white board to determine which they felt was most effective. Josh reminded them to use the information
they had just covered to make an informed decision.
After they had completed the activities he asked them to complete an exit slip (3 questions) which he could
collect before the end of the hour.

- Josh asked probing questions and followed up with additional questions after students had provided
answers. He did a nice job of soliciting deeper response from students if at first they provided surface
level answers to his inquiry.
-Josh has a solid presence in front of the class. He exhibits confidence both as a physical presence
with his grasp of the material.
- Students were engaged in class and direct questioning techniques. Most questions were
asked directly to student, randomly, during his lecture.
- Josh referred to previous work (notes) conducted to make connections to previous material.
- Directions were provided both orally and in writing.
- Josh moved about the room listening to student conversations and interjecting as necessary.

*When asked to comment on a propaganda poster which featured a woman a student began to answer a
question posed by Mr. Guastella by stating, "the chick...". It was ironic that the class was just discussing the
disparaging nature of some propaganda, which included names like "commie", "Hun" and "Jap". While Josh

did not address the issue, perhaps to the benefit of the flow of the class, he may think about using just such
situations as a teachable moment, perticularly as it related to the cirriculum.
* I was wondering what follow up would be used with students for the choices they made regarding the
effectiveness of the propaganda examples. I would be interested in hearing students points of view on this
topic.
