Fractions & Decimals Unit Plan

Grade/Subject: 5th grade Math

SOL: Math 5.2- The student will

a) recognize and name fractions in their equivalent decimal form and vice versa
b) compare and order fractions and decimals in a given set from least to greatest
and greatest to least

Essential Knowledge:

The student will use problem solving, mathematical communication, mathematical

reasoning, connections, and representations to
Represent fractions (halves, fourths, fifths, eighths, tenths, and twelfths) in their equivalent
decimal form and vice versa.
Recognize and name equivalent relationships between decimals and fractions with
denominators up to 12.
Compare and order from least to greatest and greatest to least a given set of no more than five
numbers written as decimals, fractions, and mixed numbers with denominators of 12 or less.

Day 1

Essential Questions:

1. What is the relationship between a fraction and its equivalent decimal form?

Vocabulary: fractions, decimals

Activity Description:

1. Introduce changing fractions into decimals by talking about how they previously used
remainders. (ex. 10 3)

2. Model how to change fractions into their equivalent decimal form (division without
remainders- add decimal and zero) on the board.
3. Provide students with examples to work out on their own. Students should show their
answers for assessment.
4. Students will independently complete a riddle worksheet, showing their completed work
for assessment.

Day 2
Essential Questions:

1. What is the process for changing fractions into decimals?

2. What is the relationship between a fraction and its equivalent decimal form?

Vocabulary: simplest form, fraction, decimal

Activity Description:

1. Model how to change fractions into decimals (through division).

2. Call on students to come to the board to work some problems out, guiding them when
necessary.
3. Have students finish their puzzles from previous days lesson.
4. Have students choose 1 of 3 Valentines Day worksheets. Early finishers should choose a
2nd worksheet.

Day 3

Essential Questions:

1. How does one change a fraction to a decimal?

2. What does one look at to put decimals in order, either least to greatest or greatest to least?

Vocabulary: least to greatest, greatest to least, equivalent

Activity Description:

1. Model how to order fractions and decimals from least to greatest and greatest to least.
2. Call on students to come to the board and order sets of fractions and decimals, guiding
them when necessary.
3. Have students individually complete ordering fractions worksheet. Ask them to order
them from greatest to least on left side and least to greatest on right side.
4. Have early finishers individually complete the ordering fractions maze.

For struggling students, I will meet with them in the back of the room to provide additional help
while other students are completing the worksheet.

Day 4

Essential Questions:

1. What is the relationship between fractions and their decimal form?

Vocabulary: mixed number, least to greatest, greatest to least

Activity Description:

1. Introduce comparing and ordering fractions with mixed numbers.

2. As a whole group, do the first few examples on the worksheet, calling on random
students to give answers to guided questions.
3. Have students independently finish the worksheet, using the tables learned the previous
day on a white board.
4. Split class into two groups for the card game. Modify game to include whole numbers.
