Procedures
RATIONALE for Previously in the week, students in this second grade CK
the Learning classroom learned how Thanksgiving is a holiday celebrated
Plan during the course of the school year. With this information
learned, students will be able to apply what they know to learn
about Thanksgiving, why it is celebrated, how it is celebrated,
and when we celebrate it. This lesson on Thanksgiving ties
into multiple PA SAS standards because they are learning
about a national holiday and how it is an American
celebration.
Introduction Activating Prior Knowledge
A few days ago, you have learned about a few of the
different holidays celebrated during the school year and
how one of them is Thanksgiving.
We know that we celebrate this holiday, but why is it
celebrated? How is it celebrated today? Do other
countries celebrate this holiday?
Hook/Lead-In/Anticipatory Set
As a class, we will watch an educational video on
Thanksgiving. It is from the Charlie Brown series, and
gives a brief overview of why Thanksgiving is
celebrated. It is a fun and engaging way to start the
lesson.

Objective Statement
During this lesson, you [the students] will be able to
comprehend why we celebrate Thanksgiving by doing
your own research and applying it to a scenario.

reading corner in the classroom. As a class, I will read
the book Thanksgiving on Plymouth Plantation to the
students.

Lesson PreAssessment of Students
Procedure To see what students already know about Thanksgiving, I
will give each student an iPad, and they will use the app
Jot, which is a whiteboard on the iPad. I will ask the
students questions, and they can write them down on
the iPad. I can walk around the room to look at their
responses. I will ask them questions such as when this
holiday was celebrated, why it is celebrated, and what
happened on the first Thanksgiving.
Modeling of the Concept
During the first Thanksgiving, there were two groups of
people that met during this holiday, and they were the
Native Americans and Pilgrims.
Who were the Native Americans and Pilgrims? I will
divide the class in half. Some of you will be in the
Pilgrims group, and others will be in in the Native
Americans group. Working together and using the iPads,
work together to research who these people are and
how they contributed to the first Thanksgiving. We will
share the information found with the whole class, and
make a Venn Diagram to see how similar and different
the Pilgrims and Native Americans were.
Next, I will divide you up into smaller groups of 4. Most
groups will have 2 Native Americans and 2 Pilgrims.
Work together to come up with an agreement to let one
another share your land and property, like they had to
do in read life. At the end, make sure you record your
response, and have all group members sign it. If you
choose, you can share your agreement with the class.
Make sure you use the information learned when
researching!
In order to celebrate like the Native Americans and
Pilgrims, we will have our own Thanksgiving feast, full of
traditional food, like turkey, stuffing, and pie.
Guiding the Practice
As students are working on this lesson in large and small
groups, I will circulate around the classroom to answer
questions and ask questions. The questions I ask will be
about the research they are conducting and the
information that they are finding and learning about. I
will look to make sure students are staying on-task when
completing their research and that they are finding the
proper information. Whenever they are coming to an
agreement, I will look to see if they are using the
information they have learned when conducting their
research.
Providing the Independent Practice
The research will be completed in large groups, and
when the students are coming to an agreement, they
will be working in small groups. Both settings allow
students to work together and share ideas with one
another. PA SAS standards are being met because
students are learning about a national holiday, the
history being it, and why it is celebrated. The activity
does not use a rubric, but the assessments to go with
the lesson do.
Transition
Students will stand up and stretch. I will draw random
names, and once their name is drawn, they have to
stand still and say a fact about Thanksgiving that they
have learned. Once they say their fact, they can sit
down.

Evaluation of Formal Evaluation
the Students will make a journal where they will draw 2
Learning/Master pictures and write a few sentences about each picture.
y of the The first one will be what the first Thanksgiving was like,
Concept and the second one will be what Thanksgiving is like
today. With the evidence collected, I will be able to see
what concepts students understand and which areas I
might need to reteach.
Informal Evaluation
Students will work in small groups and talk to one
another to answer the essential questions. I will have a
checklist to see which information they know and
comprehend.
Closure Summary & Review of the Learning
Students will use choral reading to read the objective
together, which was, during this lesson, you [the
students] will be able to comprehend why we celebrate
Thanksgiving by doing your own research and applying it
to a scenario.
To see if the objective has been met, they can have a
conversation in the small groups they worked in earlier
to see what they learned, ask any questions they might
have, and talk about what they struggled with during the
lesson. I will talk to students when they are with their
peers to see if they met the objective.
Homework/Assignments
No homework or assignments will be given to students
at the end of this lesson.
Teacher I will know the information learned by looking at their
Self-reflection quizzes, journals, rubrics, discussions, and answering the
essential questions.
Students who were off task when conducting research
seemed to struggle during the lesson.
To address this, I could have students work in smaller
groups, so there are less people and less distractions.
There is evidence of learning through the assessments,
discussions, journal, and the agreement written during
the lesson.
