Increase row : to ensure that the pattern spirals properly, one more stitch
needs to be added.
P1, M1 then purl all stitches to the end of the round. (89 stitches)
Purl the next row.
Pattern
K3, P3 continue
As you are using 89 stitches, the columns of rib will not line up, they will
automatically be 1 stitch out at the end of each round. This will cause the
ridges to naturally spiral around the hat.
Continue the K3, P3 pattern until the body of the hat measures 7 inches from
the cast on edge.
To make the star shape at the top, knit all the knit stitches and purl all of
the purl stitches, so the ribs start going straight up. In the first round of
doing this you will be one stitch short . To rectify this, increase 1 stitch
wherever it is needed to keep the pattern constant.
Complete one more round of knitting all the knit stitches and purling all
the purl stitches.
Decrease
Note: depending upon where you stop in the spiral pattern you may need to
start with the purl stitch first.
Cut approximately 18 inches of yarn. Using the tapestry needle, thread the
yarn through the remaining stitches, and pull the stitches tight.
Join in the round, taking care not to twist the stitches. Place stitch marker.
Increase row :
(K12, M1) repeat until the last 4 stitches K4 (95 stitches)
Purl the next row.
Pattern
K3, P3 continue
As you are using 95 stitches, the columns of rib will not line up, they will
automatically be 1 stitch out at the end of each round. This will cause the
ridges to naturally spiral around the hat.
Continue the K3, P3 pattern until the body of the hat measures 9 inches from
the cast on edge.
