Introduction
We were introduced to this idea of making the Dumpling Crank by Dr. Xinli Wu as the first
design project for our EDSGN 100 class. We were assigned in groups and started brainstorming
ideas to design a compact, durable and reusable Dumpling Maker. In brief, this project will show
the culmination of a groups hard work and determination to get the job done.

Description of the Design Task

Problem Statement
The problem we are solving is the absence of a dumpling maker that satisfies commercial
and residential needs. Currently, making dumplings is a labor intensive process that takes up
time and manpower. Restaurants are unable to produce a large quantity of dumplings without
having many employees helping make them. Similarly, at the residential level there is no
dumpling maker that is convenient to use and inexpensive.

Mission Statement
Our goal is to design a dumpling maker prototype that will resolve the problem facing
commercial and residential consumers.

Design Specifications
Will be automatic or semiautomatic
Produce at least 10 dumplings per minute
Cost will not exceed $200
Be safe to operate, easy to maintain, safe to use as a food processor, and
be dishwasher safe

Concept Generation

For design A we designed a machine that would be fully automatic. The dough would be
smashed into a sheet by two pistons. The dough sheet would then fall into rollers that would take
the dough to get filling and then be cut and folded in one motion.

For design B, we designed another fully automatic machine. Rollers would flatten the dough into
a sheet that would then fall onto a conveyor belt. The dough would then be stamped into a circle
by a cookie cutter. Filling would then be added and be taken to folders and pushed out of the way
by a plunger.

5
Design C was designed to be semi-automatic. Dough would be poured into two rollers that
would be controlled by the operator via a crank. The sheet of dough would then be cut into
circles by two cookie cutters and fall onto the conveyor belt. Once on the conveyor, the circles
would have filling added and then be folded,
Design D is a fully automatic machine. Dough would be added and rolled into a sheet by rollers.
Then the sheets would be stamped into circles and fall onto a rotating wheel. While on the wheel
the dumplings would have filling added and be folded then be pushed off the wheel.

6
Design E is a fully automatic machine as well. Dough would be added and rolled into a sheet by
a series of rollers. Then while on a conveyor belt the dough would be stamped into shape and
have filling added. The dumpling would be folded and pushed off the folders.

Design Features
The Dumpling Crank has many unique and appealing features. First off the semi-automatic
nature of the machine allows for different speeds of production. The Dumpling Crank has three
modes slow, medium, and fast. Since the crank is synced to the stamper and rollers, it is up to the
operator to determine the pace as the conveyor has three speeds. To achieve these varied speeds,
the filling dispenser is timed to deposit the right amount of filling dead center every time no
matter the speed. Additionally, the plunger allows for the ejection of the dumpling the clamp to
ensure maximum efficiency and safety and to attain at least ten, ready to cook, dumplings
minute. All parts are removable and dishwasher safe to ensure that cleaning is not a hassle.

Operation Instructions
Premix dough and filling. Add pre-made dough into the top funnel and pre-made filling into the
filling dispenser. Place a bowl or other collection method at the end of the conveyor belt to
collect the finished dumplings. Turn the conveyor belt on and select a speed. Rotate the crank
clock-wise, starting slow and increasing speed as you become more comfortable with operating
the machine. Continue to rotate the crank until there is no more dough left and dumplings are
finished.

Engineering Analysis

Working Mechanism
The process starts when pre made dough is added to the top funnel. The dough gets flattened by
the rollers which are connected to the crank and the flattened dough gets cut into a circle by a
cookie cutter stamp that is synced to the rotating crank and rollers. Then the dough circles fall on
a conveyor belt. When moving on the conveyer belt the premixed filling will drop from a timed
dispenser on the perfectly rolled dough when it is below the dispenser. Then the dough with the
filling slides from the conveyer belt to a clamp to seal the dumpling and then the dumpling is
pushed through into a bowl.

Total Cost $199.33

The total cost of the Dumpling Crank will be $199.33. This price should drop even lower once it
goes into mass production to make it even more affordable.

Summary and Conclusions

The four of us worked together to complete the goal of designing and constructing a
prototype of a dumpling maker to be used in either a household or restaurant setting. We worked
through the design process together and reached our common goal as a team. This report is
documentation of the process and our choices along the way. The design project gave us an
insight of how the world works in terms of designing things for engineers. Overall, it was a great
experience of making the Dumpling Crank and made us a learn a lot in the field we all are
looking forward to working in.

Acknowledgements
We would Like to thank Dr. Xinli Wu and our teaching assistants for their assistance and
experience. The project helped with furthering our skills in design production. It also required for
our team to work together to overcome problems, which prepares us for our future in the
engineering field.
