Career path and practices

Sociology is a great career but Going through the school system is not always a walk in

the park, one may wonder whether the work is worth the struggle. Education is a key factor when

it comes to finding or keeping a job. Aside from this, education is capable of opening doors to

higher, well-paying, rewarding and stimulating careers. People go to college for various reasons,

but the common goals among most students is to finish their studies and get employed, raise a

family and live a life that corresponds to the level of education they have achieved. This paper

looks at various reasons as to why one should choose a career in sociology and path one intends

to take to achieve it.

According to the U.S Bureau of Statistics, although sociology is very popular career

amongst undergraduates, there is a direct relationship between the level of education and the

likelihood of finding a job (Freiermuth 56). It further reported that at each level of education, the

level of employment drops. This simply means that as the degree of education increases chances

a getting a job are very slim especially in the sociology field. Do to the fact that sociology is very

popular career with a relatively small number of positions. I personally know that many lines of

work require particular qualification which might take several years to achieve. Understanding

the requirements of a chosen career allows one to prepare for the career they want.

A career path is more of a journey than a one-time decision. Every career path has a

milestone which has to be fulfilled, ''sociology is the study of social problems, sociologists study

society, and social behavior by examining the groups, cultures, organizations, social institutions,

and processes that develop when people interact and work together.'' Stated by U.S Bureau of

Statistics (occupational outlook handbook). To become a sociologist you must have a degree in

the field. The typical Entry-level education is a masters degree which may take upwards of 4

years to obtain.

However many students who may only have completed their study's and obtained a

bachelors degree will find positions in related fields such as, social services, education,

healthcare or public policy. As I was conducting my interview I can recall My interviewee

''stated that the reason why he wanted to pursue a career in sociology was because ''as far as he

can remember he has always enjoyed helping people, which also gives one another way of

understanding society and why people do what they do. Moreover he enjoys finding solutions

that can help better the society'' (whisman).

Paul's quote corresponds with my belief about the sociology career, because I too love

working towards something that can possibly make a change. I doing so I want to figure out

solutions to help our society, because in our society there so many different problems that are

always going on, but there seems to be little or any solutions or anyone looking to fix them.

Stated by the U.S Bureau of Statistics, ''Sociology is a career in which one has to conduct

a lot of research in order to figure out the solutions'' (occupational outlook handbook). So if one

is pursuing this career than one has to be prepared to conduct these studies. According to my

interviewee thats one of the reasons why he choose this career he further declared that ''if you

are passionate about research and society impact on civilization then yes I do recommend this

career '' (whisman).

One aspect in which sociology thrives amongst other major would have to be the pay.

According to the U.S Bureau of Statistics, the median pay is ''$ 79,750 with the hourly wage

being $ 38.34'' (summary U.S bureau of statistics). This can be rewarding at the end of one's

educational career because not only will it enable them to work in a career that pays relatively

well, but a career that allows them to make a good living which will allow them to provide for

themselves and their families.

The paper has listed several reasons and information on one who would consider

sociology as a career. The kind of career one chooses will, however, depend on the kind of

person one is. In most cases, careers are chosen depending on ones abilities and interests. So

selecting a career should always revolve around the two. It is also important to choose careers

that are in line with barriers one is likely to face. This will be helpful as one will have the option

of changing careers in line with other duties. It will also be important to assess their capabilities,

knowledge, and qualities as these will help one in achieving a fulfilling career.
