Standard Test Method for Recovery of Asphalt From solution by Abson Method
ASTM D 1856-95a (2003)
APPARATUS:
1. Centrifuge:
a. Batch Unit: Exerting a minimum centrifugal force of 770 times gravity? ____
b. Continuous Unit: Exerting a minimum force of 3000 times gravity (e.g. SSM
operating at 9000 RPMS)? ____
c. Refer to Apparatus specified in D 96? .. ____
REAGENTS / MATERIALS:
1. Carbon Dioxide Gas: With pressurized tank / pressure reducing valve? ____
2. Reagent Grade Trichloroethylene? .. ____
Important:
Standard Test Method for Recovery of Asphalt From solution by Abson Method
ASTM D 1856-95a (2003)
PROCEDURE:
b. Transfer all of solution from centrifuge to a large flask for primary distillation
operation using several washes of solvent? ... ____
c. Solution reduced to about 200 ml by primary distillation? ____
d. All of residue transferred to a 250 ml flask for secondary distillation using several
washes of solvent? .. ____
e. Secondary distillation apparatus assembled (Refer to Fig. 1 of D 1856-95a) . ____
f. Positioned bottom of aeration tube above solution surface? ____
g. Proceeded with distillation until temperature reaches 135 C (275F)? . ____
Note2: During this period lower the aeration tube until bulb is in contact with
bottom of flask and introduce the CO2 gas at approximately 100 ml/min.
h. Increased CO2 flow to approximately 900 mL/min. when temperature reaches 157 to
160C (315 to 320F)? ____
i. Maintained CO2 flow rate for 10 min. while at the same time maintaining the
temperature of the residue at 160 to 166C (320 to 330F) ____
Note 3: If dripping is still occurring from the delivery tube after 10 minutes,
maintain the flow rate and temperature until 5 min. after dripping ceases.
Note 4: Flow time for CO2 shall not be less than 15 min.
