2nd Grade Weekly Newsletter Week Of: April 21, 2017 Name:________________________#: __________

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Week 32! We hope you had a restful weekend.

Starting on April 24th, all STEM educators will only perform work duties (supervising students, teaching, planning, grading,
parent communication) between the hours of 7:45 - 2:45. This means that doors will not open to students until 7:45 a.m.
Teachers will not be supervising morning duty at 7:30 like before. Children who need breakfast will take a breakfast upon
arriving to STEM. Please arrive promptly at 2:45 p.m. for pick-up. Teachers and STEM staff will not supervise students in the
office after 2:45. The doors will be closed and parent volunteers will be outside with children who need to be picked up. No
STEM teachers will be on campus before 7:45 or after 2:45. This action is a response to underfunding in our schools and
unfair labor demands from our employers. If youd like to support STEM teachers and our school even further, please refer to
the letter that was passed out at conferences and emailed that lists state and city officials you can contact. Thank you for
your support, it means the world to us!

2nd graders will be engaging in a 4th Quarter PBL entitled Choose Your Own Adventure. In the Choose Your Own
Adventure project, students will be thinking about the concept of what it means to take a risk. We will be exploring this idea
through the lense of immigrants and their difficult decisions and journey to America. Attached to this packet is Part One of
the PBL. Students are to interview an immigrant to explore their thinking as they made the decision to come to the U.S. This
part of the project will be due on Friday, May 5th.

Reading: Please carefully read some of the changes to our homework routines for the 4th quarter inside the packet. This
month we will be continuing a unit focusing on tackling longer books. Students will be working on strategies to navigate the
meaning of the book all the way to the end, fluency strategies and tackling tricky words.

Math: Thank you for working with your child on Time & Money. I was very pleased with how students performed on their unit
test. Moving forward, we have started our unit on Weight & Capacity. Students will be learning how to choose appropriate
tools to measure weight, choose appropriate tools to measure capacity, share data using tables, line plots, and bar graphs,
and describe data that we have found in a paragraph. This week's homework is a Weight Investigation, so please help your
child with some experiential learning at home. If you do not have a kitchen/bathroom scale at home, then feel free to ask
another STEM family if you could borrow a scale.

Remember, the homework packet is due on Friday, May 6. No late work is accepted. As always, please do not hesitate to
reach out to us. Have a great week! Thank you for your support!
