At the right is a simple cantilever system that we will design using the collective techn
we have thus far learned. You will need to determine what weight, W 1, is needed at th
end of the system to cause the desired deflection in the circular beam. You will have t
calculate the weight of the mass, W2, on the left side of the system.
Once calculated, you will use these values to determine the overall lateral length, L, of
circular beam along with the distance, d, to the left of the pivot point.
Just follow my lead below on how to solve for this "artsy" system
Here are your parameters; you will select these cells as needed:
Now let's calculate W2; this is a donated block of granite, and its value is given as:

We are going to determine the coefficients for a rational function using a slightly
approach from what we have been doing. Here is our function:
P(4) = 4
P(2) = -2
P(-2) = 10 Note that we have segregated our numerator's (P(x)) results
P(-4) = 28 from those of the denominator (Q(x)). This gives us 8 unique
equations for our 8 unknown coefficients.
Q(3) = 91
Q(1) = 65 We are going to program the [C] and [R] matrices accordingl
Q(0) = 64 per the below instructions .
Q(-4) = 0
