Topic: Factors Affecting Diffusion Temperature

Class: Form 4 Integrated Science

Topic Description:

The topic: Factors Affecting Diffusion Temperature belongs to the Unit: The

Organism and its Environment. This topic involves the following:

Particles are in constant random motion, and as a result, can collide with each other. This

collision causes particles to move from one place to the next, usually from where there is a lot to

where there is little; and this occurs until particles are evenly distributed. The movement of

particles from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration is known as

diffusion. Several factors affect the rate of diffusion; and temperature is one such factor. At

increased temperature, particles gain kinetic energy and so collide at a faster rate. Therefore

particles also move from one place to the next at a faster rate. At decreased temperature, particles

lose kinetic energy and collisions occur more slowly. Therefore particles also move from one

place to the next at a slower rate.

Unit Objectives Learning Outcomes:

Students should:

1. Be aware that matter is made up of particles.

2. Develop investigative and problem-solving skills.

Instructional Objectives Classification Learning Type

1. Explain the principles involved in the movement

of particles from one place to the next. Comprehension Cognitive

2. Record the time taken (seconds) for Kool-Aid

crystals to diffuse in water to consecutive 1cm

marks over a 6cm distance at: Knowledge Cognitive

(i) Room temperature

(ii) Water at 70oC

(iii)Water at 5oC

3. Construct a line graph of the distance moved by

the Kool-Aid crystals versus the time taken, to Application Cognitive

represent the data recorded for the three

temperatures.

4. Examine the relationship between the rate of

diffusion and temperature with reference to the Analysis Cognitive

graph constructed.

5. Recognize the importance of diffusion in life

processes and everyday situations. Receiving Affective

Are there cognitive objectives at unit level? Awareness is more affective. Look at objective 2, is

it a learning outcome or an activity?
