Technology and the Teacher

Lesson Plan 1

This lesson was the first of which I attempted to utilize a hands-on program in the classroom. I

selected this particular approach for the Form 5V since the students are easily bored in the classroom.

They are usually eager to work with computers; and I decided that this approach would be ideal in

assisting them achieving the learning outcomes.

Each pair of students were equipped with laptops and the required program; therefore all students

had the opportunity to participate in the lesson. The use of the multimedia projector assisted students in

easily navigating the program, and arriving at the Human Ear aspect. Students were excited to use the

software as a means of learning and discovering new information; and the computerized model enabled

students to gain a more realistic visualization of the various structures that make up the ear. In addition,

the audio that accompanied each structure (when they clicked on the name of the structure) made it easy

for the students to understand the function associated with that structure. Overall, the students were quite

engaged in the learning activity.

However, for some groups, their laptops were not fully charged and lost power whilst interacting

with the software. This created some difficulty as there were not enough electrical outlets available for

charging the laptops. Students had to be incorporated into different groups; and the exercise needed to

be restarted for those students who had not arrived at the same point on the program.

Although there were problems with respect to charging of the laptops, the use of the software

was well-embraced and the students enjoyed participating in such a lesson. At Vishnu Boys Hindu

College, the students are always willing and excited to use technology in the classroom to assist in

learning; therefore I intend to continue the use of technology in subsequent class sessions. In order to

overcome the problem of laptops losing charge, students will be advised to fully charge their laptops

before the class session it is intended for use.

Prior to this lesson, my usual method of integrating technology into lesson delivery was through

the use of Power Point presentations. This approach with the use of practical software in the classroom

demonstrated that presentations did not stimulate students as much as this approach did. It has taught me

that technology can be integrated into lesson delivery in a variety of ways; and the most appropriate

method to assist students in achieving learning outcomes need to be selected. I have also realized that

teaching and lesson delivery goes beyond verbally dispelling information to students; and the use of

technology in the classroom is an innovative way to stimulate learning.

This is how laptops were meant to be used. Infrastructure is a bug bear but you all seemed to have

worked around it. Did this lesson require more planning that other lessons? How did your role change

in this lesson?

CONCEPT OR PRINCIPLE

The ear is one of the five sensory organs; and is specifically responsible for hearing sound. It is
composed of a variety of structures, each of which carries out a specific function. The specificities of
each of these delicate structures making up the ear allow sound to be recognized at different frequencies,
loudness and pitch. It is therefore essential that these delicate structures be protected inside the ear
structure to prevent damage and possible loss of hearing.

The internal structure of the ear is simply

composed of an eardrum and ear canal.

ACTIVITIES

Introduction:
The teacher will begin the lesson by walking into the classroom with earphones on. The teacher
will ask students how their day has been going so far, and will wait for a response.
The teacher will observe that students are responding, but will inform students they need to
speak loudly since she cannot hear.
Students will respond by telling the teacher she needs to remove the earphones in order to hear
their responses.
The teacher will ask students why is it necessary that the earphones be removed; and students
respond by indicating that the ears are used for hearing sound.
The teacher will introduce the topic for the class session The Human Ear.

Development:
The teacher will write the objectives for the class session on the whiteboard.
The teacher will inform students that they will be examining the internal structure of the human
ear, identifying the specific function o each structure and how they assist in hearing.
Students will be placed into pairs; and each pair will be required turn on their laptops, and start
the Ultimate Human Body program (previously loaded during the recess session).
The teacher will project the program unto the whiteboard using the multimedia projector, and
will guide students through navigating the program to select the option for the Human Ear.
Each pair of students will be given the opportunity to navigate through the human ear,
identifying each structure, with the program explaining its function.
Each group will be required to use their plasticine and construct a model of the internal structures
of the human ear.
Groups will be chosen at random to display their model to the rest of the class, identifying key
structures and explaining how they assist in hearing.

Evaluation / Assessment:
Students will be given a worksheet to complete. The worksheet will consist of problem-based questions
DEVRANI NARINE-GADAR 04740401 7

relating to damages to ear structures and its effect on hearing.

Consolidation:
The teacher will review the main points of the lesson
Students will assist in answering questions asked by others.

Assignment:
(i) Past-paper questions relating to the structure and function of the human ear.
