Analysis Reflection

An artifact that I believe reflects my ability to analyze, was one I did for English

Literature, Living in Sin poem analysis. The main focus of the assignment was to thoroughly

analyze the poem and derive an idea of the characters relationship by breaking the poem down

to successfully gather enough evidence to support our idea. Our goal was to explain how certain

literary techniques and devices were used in the poem that allowed Adrienne Rich to effectively

portray the idea concluded from the poem.

I believe this artifact represents this category because as I was doing this assignment, I

realized that this assignment required me to explain why it was that the author chose to use

certain diction or how the literary device change the meaning of a whole stanza. Apart from

explaining, I also had to reevaluate and modify my thesis to use all literary techniques to my

advantage. For example, after I analyzed the couples relationship based on what I read, I

realized that structure of the poem itself also was a factor that needed to be taken into account

which led me to modify the thesis I had started out with.

As I completed this assignment, I performed various student learning objectives that

made me a critical thinker as well as an effective communicator. This applies to this assignment

because I had to analyze and incorporate text in order to support my thesis to make it well

structured, which is why I was a critical thinker. Not only that but I also was an effective

communicator because in order to successfully make my point, I had to convince my audience

through evidence that was clear and straight forward. As well as being a critical thinker, I also

was an effective communicator when giving an in depth explanation why each and every

supporting evidence I use matters. I had to effectively communicate to my audience what I was

trying to say by explaining the text and giving a short vague summary of the poem. I believe this
assignment portrays that I was an effective communicator because while I was writing this

assignment, I took my audience into account and created this thesis without creating a bias.

While completing this assignment, I realized that I picked up some skills and learned my

weaknesses as well aa strengths. I acquired English skills and picked up new ways to analyze the

text, not only that but I learned how to structure a thesis based on the text without having a bias.

This assignment will be useful to me in the future because I may refer back to this assignment

when I need an idea of how to create a claim and execute it.
