Physical Sciences: Light Term 3 Week 2

We are learning that light is the only type of electromagnetic radiation we can see. We can
see light as a wide range of colours.
White light is made up of a range of colours and we can see them using different methods
to separate them.

What do you know about light and the different colours in light?
Write and draw to explain.

What do you observe when sunlight shines on the surface of the CD?
Write and draw
Predict what you think will happen

If the weather is sunny, we will explore looking at the surface of a CD in sunlight.

Can you reflect the sunlight onto white paper on a clipboard?

Investigation: What happens to the reflected light when we change the type of light?
In the dark science room try to reflect the light from a light source off a CD onto white
paper on a clip board.

Did your observations match your predictions?

What do you observe?

Physical Sciences: Reflecting Light Term 3 Week 3
We are learning that light from a source can be reflected.
Explore - Use mirrors to solve the challenges:
Draw diagrams to show what you would do. Try to show the direction of light rays.

1. Look at the back of your head 2. See around a corner

Use your mirror to change the way you see these lines and shapes.

Make the line look longer

Make the line look like a dot
Double the number of lines side by side

Make this shape a

way that shows them correctly when viewed in a mirror.

The direction of light in a ray diagram is shown using straight lines with arrows. Draw a ray
diagram to show the light moving from the heart to and reflecting from the mirror. Draw
where you think the reflection of the light from the heart will go.

Science Week Year 5_6_7 Part 1: Drones Droids and Robots Week 4 Term
3
Drones, Droids and Robots is the school theme for National Science Week 2016. It was
was chosen specifically to highlight STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths by
focusing on autonomous systems technology.

Our expectations of technology in the real world often come from science fiction content.
From the imagination of writers such things as lasers, robots, rocket ships and atomic
power were all described in science fiction long before they became science fact.
Inspiration from science fiction has lead researchers and designers to develop novel
devices and systems that change the ways we do things.

Write and/ or draw about technology you have seen in movies or a TV show that has A
become real or you would like to become real.

machine is an object invented by humans to help in their daily tasks.

Everyone would agree that drones, droids and robots are machines but what makes them
different from each other and different from other machines?

Physical Sciences: Light and Colour Term 3 Week 6 and 7

Learning goal: To recognise that the colour of an object depends on the properties of
the object and the colour of the light source
Watch Prezi Light and Sleek Geeks Colour

What have you learnt about light? What have you learnt about colour?

Using the Hodson light box kit Mixing different colours of light
**Safety warning the globe in the light box gets hot and can cause a burn if you touch
it.
Do not move the boxes.
Do not touch the globes.
First aid if you get a burn place it under cold running water straight away for at
least 20 minutes.
Be careful in the dark move and behave calmly and safely

Colour addition use coloured filters to combine different colours.

What do you notice? Write and draw

Colour subtraction use coloured filters to shine different colour light on the opaque
cards.

Physical Sciences: Light and shadows Term 3 Week 7 & 8

We are learning about shadows from point and extended light sources such as
torches. Science involves making predictions and describing patterns and relationships.

What do you know about how we see different materials and how shadows are formed?

Work with a partner and a torch to create hand puppet shadows on the science room
wall.
Write and draw the shapes you made.

How can you make the shadow puppets bigger?

How can you make the shadow puppets smaller?

Use plasticine to make a model 5 cm high

Place your 5cm model on the desk and use your torch to create a shadow. Make three
different observations on the length of shadow and the position of your torch.
