break, a small group of 9 students from
AFHS will be involved in a French exchange
led by Madame Probst. 23 students from
Saint Martin, France, come to America on
March 25th, just before spring break. We
have gotten really creative with our hosting
placements, states Madame Probst. She
also says she wants her students to see
French culture from the perspective of a
native because that will be much more
meaningful that just studying the culture from beach trip to Emerald Isle, as well as many
afar. They will join students here at Apex

approaching, the importance of potential
danger looms in the distance. However, with
these safety tips, AFHS students will be
basically guaranteed a safe and spectacular

Be Responsible
Spring Break has been notoriously known as
an excuse for young people to go wild, but be
responsible and aware of actions. Binge
drinking has been one of the most concerning
actions Spring Breakers partake in. For a
man, binge drinking is defined as consuming
five or more drinks within two hours. For a
woman, its consuming four or more drinks
within two hours, according to forbes.com.
With this excessive behavior comes other
dangers. Men and women should never pick
up the drink they put down due to the risk of
date rape drugs. Set limitations and plan

AFHS students should remember to be aware
of their surroundings and potential at-risk
behavior. If someone ends up in an
uncomfortable and unsafe situation, then leave

The day after the French exchange
students leave the US to go back home, AFHS
students involved in the exchange here will be
flying to France. Students will be involved in many
sightseeing activities there, as well as enjoying
the typical French life. Apex Friendship students
will have the opportunity to tour Versailles, the
Eiffel Tower, La Seine Bateau Mouche, and even
their school. Madame Probst says, I am most
to travel with their French families. Since the
American students arrive, some families will
actually be going on another vacation, taking the
American student along with them. The
exchange will be much more than just going to

Bunny-Free Easter

As an iconic symbol of the Easter
holiday, bunnies, with their big ears and cotton
tails, often receive a lot of attention. Of the
rabbits adopted for Easter, 80% end up
abandoned, according to huffingtonpost.com.
Caroline Gracie, the head of Main Line Animal
Rescue, warns people that, often after a very
short period of time, people abandon them and
they end up in shelter or worse.
Many people fail to realize that rabbits
can not be considered a low-maintenance pet.
They often require as much care as dogs, and
they dont stay small and cute forever. Rabbits
live anywhere from 8 to 12 years. Often, people
not willing to care for these animals any longer
think that setting them free will be in the best
interest of the rabbits. In fact, this action may be
one of the cruelest acts a rabbit owner could do.

If you want your dog to live longer,
listen up. Your dog's life span could be greatly
expanded because of a new pill called
Rapamycin, according to CNN. This pill helps
cancer patients, but after a decade of using it on
mice, research has shown it to have expanded
their lifespan by 60%. Rapamycin had been

discovered fifty years ago on Easter Island in the
South Pacific, and then studied in a Canadian
lab. These pills have been known as the most
effective in fighting aging that Professor Arlan
Richardson at the Reynolds Oklahoma Center
may have seen.
The University of Washingtons Dog
Aging Project had the pill given to sixteen dogs,
and then had their hearts imaged. Their hearts
came out looking more youthful. This pill should
help your dogs lifespan by 10%, which will be
around two to three more years on their life. Not
only will this pill help your dog and how long they
live, but it helps fight any inflammation and any
growing cancer cells. It could reduce the
chances of them catching any age related
diseases, and youll get more time with them.

abused animals on earth. Rabbits happen
to be unique in that they have versatility
from an economic standpoint. They can be
used for pets, for their meat, for their fur,

Maybelline and skincare brands such as
Vaseline and Neutrogena continue to test
on animals, according to peta.org. Rabbits,
along with other animals, suffer many brutal
experiments including, Forced chemical
exposure in toxicity testing, which can
include oral force-feeding, forced inhalation,
skin or injection into the abdomen, muscle,
etc., according to the Humane Society.

only deserve to be nurtured and cared for.
They shouldnt be kept in labs to have daily
testing done. Think twice when deciding if this
pill or any animal tested products merit the
money. If the animals have to suffer, then
maybe not.

What the Heck-a is DECA?

Ever wondered what happens in
DECA? DECA used to be called the
Distributive Education Clubs of America, and
has since been called an Association of
Marketing Students. In this club, students learn
about marketing, finance, hospitality, and
management. Founded in 1946, Mr. Jackson,
co-head of DECA, revealed that DECA works
to prepare young entrepreneurs and leaders for
college and career readiness. Upon joining
DECA, students have several opportunities for
leadership through officer positions, or through
taking initiative, when students take action
without having to be told what to do.
DECA consists of three competitive
sessions, including: district, state, and
international. At the most recent competition,
64 Apex Friendship DECA students went to a
State Career Development Conference from
March 9th-11th in Greensboro. Many Patriots
became finalists and even placed in this
competition. AFHS DECA students competed
in 38 different events. 28 Patriots made it to
stage to be recognized as finalists in their
specific competition.
DECA took 28 written business plans
to the conference, with one where students
appear as representatives of their school for
the entire chapter project with the Apex
Chamber of Commerce. One project included

Art: Feeling artsy? Go to the
art museum. Enjoy the culture, paintings, and
sculptures, while discovering the meaning
behind each piece. Periodically, the museum
exhibits change, bringing in beautiful and better
works of art each time. On Friday, April 14th,
the museum will play All about Eve, a film
starring Marilyn Monroe. If interested, visit the
website to learn more about fun activities and
events to participate in.

The Apex Underground Plan by Caleb Mills,
Nick Pirano, and Hunter Welkinson. Another
chapter project named YEETs (Young
Entrepreneurship Education Team), created by
Jessica Hong, Zach Bramsheck, and Emily
Heir presented findings from a school project.
Based off of a project in English teacher Mrs.
Tuttles class, Stop the Silence was another
chapter project, created by Rachel Davis and
Ahnna Chay. Katie Dumas Community
Service Project also made an appearance,
which many may remember as the Bobs
Buddies project for Volleyball. Three out of the
four chapter projects made it to the stage for
recognition, and YEETs received a 2nd place
trophy.
In total, DECA Patriots received 6
trophies, which made them eligible for
attendance at the International Career
Development Conference in Anaheim,
California, from April 26th-30th. Of the trophies
received, 3 plans had 2nd place trophies out of
the entire state. 12 Patriots will be going to
Anaheim, including seven 2nd place finishers,
a 3rd place finisher (Emily Kapaligio), and
another trophy winner (Grace Flemming).
DECA has grown a lot this year at
Apex Friendship. Last year, AFHS took 59
students to districts, 14 students to state, and
6 finalists to Nashville for Internationals. This
year, AFHS doubled the number taken to
Pullen Park. Many options exist, like riding the
train, boat rentals, an art center, ball field,
theatre in the park, and more. On the 7th and
14th, Pullen Park hosts a dinner and a movie,
starting at 7pm. On the 13th, the park will host
an Egg Hunt Challenge for teens. Visit

family friendly environment with siblings,
relatives, and even friends.
City of Raleigh Museum: Want to know more
about the city of Raleigh? Come to the City of
Raleigh Museum. Housed in the 1874 Briggs
Building, the museum holds exhibits that
change periodically which shows the history of
Raleigh.
Buckhorn Disc Golf Course: Established in
2001, the Buckhorn Disc Golf Course
challenges and offers fun. With out of bounds
and tight airways, test your accuracy and
distance. Gather your friends and Frisbees for
a fun day of play.

he stated proudly, to see the joy on their faces,

DECA teaches students an important
lesson--one that Mr. Jackson explains to be the
most important aspect of DECA and his classes-
-and surprisingly, the lesson comes through
failure. Mr. Jackson revealed that he finds it
awesome to see the students fail because they
can learn from it. In his classes and in DECA,
students spend a lot of time on reflection. He
said, Just dont move away from failure and go
to the next thing until youve learned something
from what youve done.

expresses that an exchange gives the
student a perspective of a native, rather than
just somebody from the outside looking in.
She believes that studying from this
perspective is so much more meaningful
that just studying the culture from afar. She
also expresses her excitement that students
have the opportunity to use French language
skills in an actual French community rather
than in the classroom with certain stimulated
activities. Although tours will be given of
famous attractions, students will live in a
French home to have a more personal
involvement in a typical French lifestyle. The
same goes for French students living here in
North Carolina. All the students will also
hopefully gain a new friend through this
exchange.

Dr. Seuss: Too Wacky, Too Wild?

Theodor Seuss Geisel, most
commonly known under his pseudonym Dr.
Seuss wrote many childrens books that have
played a part in so many childhoods, such as
The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham.
Geisel would have celebrated his 110th
birthday in March and now will be
remembered and celebrated throughout this
month for his famous poetry. Arguably, one of
the most notable aspects of Seuss books and
poetry would be his famous, and sometimes
silly, rhyming schemes. His use of unique
characters, plot, and rhyme technique help to
engage readers, especially younger
audiences, who might get distracted
otherwise. Dr. Seuss says about reading,
You're never too old, too wacky, too wild, to
pick up a book and read to a child.
Dr. Seuss originally set out to
become a professor of English, attending
Oxford University. However, according to
poetryfoundation.org, he soon became
frustrated when he was shunted into a
particularly insignificant field of research
according to Myra Kibler in the Dictionary of
Literary Biography. Shortly afterwards, he
dropped out of graduate school and began
working as a cartoonist, selling his art and
The Eagle Tree: A Review

In July of 2016 The Eagle Tree by
Ned Hayes had been released. The Eagle Tree
tells the story of a young boy named March who
absolutely loves trees. After finding out that an
extremely rare and old tree nearby has been
scheduled to be destroyed, he hatches a plan to
save it.
The Eagle Tree seems very
reminiscent of the popular middle-grade book,
Hoot by Carl Hiaasen. However, Hayes tells
The Eagle Tree story from a unique
perspective. Ned Hayes draws from his
extensive experience working with special
needs kids to create a main character on the
autism spectrum. March falls fairly high on the
spectrum. While verbal, the extent of his
speaking capabilities remain limited.

Shortly after the war, he began
creating the animated movie How the Grinch
Stole Christmas. This movie easily has
become a holiday tradition for many, and the

Athlete of the Month

Aprils Athlete of the Month
features Kiley McNeill, AFHS junior and
member of the varsity STUNT team.
McNeill started STUNT as a freshman at
Apex High, and has continued into her third
year at AFHS. It was like the first year it's
ever opened, and I've just been doing it
every year since then. To those unfamiliar
with STUNT, McNeill says, Its
cheerleading, but only the athletic part. It
doesn't have like the actual like cheer, or

While McNeill has been practicing
STUNT for a couple of years, the sport itself
has been fairly new. Coach Sichak says,
Stunt is a new sport in Wake County; it is
on its third year now, the reason they
created it is to fulfill Title IX. It is to have the
same number of guy participants as girls in
a new high school sport.
So far the STUNT team has been
doing great overall. Coach Sichak says,
The team is doing very well. We are very

dance part of it; it's just the stunting and
tumbling.
Coach Sichak says that Kiley
McNeill qualifies as Athlete of the Month
because, She is hardworking, she is
determined, she works well with others,
shes a leader, she helps with making sure
people are focused, and if something is
wrong, she gives them advice, and shes
always going out of her way to do

into it. After doing STUNT for so long,
McNeill says, I think its fun to start as a
new team because Ive done that twice now
and you get to work with new people and
teach people how to do it, so Im like the
only one on the teams that's done it all
