1. Introduction

Main purpose of this report is to design a suitable specification of high voltage test equipment and design
high voltage laboratory layout to conduct high voltage destructive test on power apparatus in the 132kV
transmission system voltage. The destructive tests are as follows,
1. Withstand and flashover test with AC (50Hz)
2. DC and Impulse (lightning) waves test.

2.3 Description about essential features in HV laboratory
2.3.1 Power supply to HV lab
The power supply for a complete HV laboratory is usually from a medium voltage network. One
or several three phase distribution transformers in a nearby substation should be used for that
purpose. One has to take into consideration the maximum required test power (active and
reactive components), the supply power for control and measuring systems, the power for all
auxiliary equipment and an extra charge for later extensions.
Power cables connect this external power supply with the power supply room. This room should
be arranged close to the HV test hall and should also be shielded in connection with the
shielding of the related test room. The connection of the external power cables to the
equipment for distribution and regulation in the power supply room is realized via high
frequency (HF) power filters attached to the shielding of this room.
Switching cubicles with main and operation switches, measuring equipment for primary voltages
and currents, protection devices and control components like programmable logic controllers (PLC).
Regulators, one for each HV test system and compensation reactors and/or capacitor banks, to
reduce the demand of external supply power.

2.3.2 Grounding connection of the equipment
A single point ground is commonly used. In this an earthing grid is installed within the laboratory
floor, and connection from the grid is given by a large sized copper conductor to a point identified as
a common ground point. The ground connections of various equipment and other components of
the high voltage test circuit are made to the common ground.

2.3.3 Earthing system of the laboratory

A typical good earthing system consists of a copper network with meshes of 1 m width laid down
below the ground level around the impulse test area and well connected. This network is
extended over the entire area comprising all equipment such as testing transformers, charging
HV rectifier set, lest bay, etc. The grid should be electrically connected to all the metallic frames
and reinforcing iron in the concrete walls and pillars of the building at their bottom points. Impulse
test area must be provided with a spread, stretched, or expanded copper grid on the floor of
thickness of about 2 mm with ground rods driven into the earth to a depth equal to the height of
the impulse generator. The rods are welded to the inside copper grid as well as surface copper
grid. Earth connection facility is to be provided for every 16 sq. m area so that shortest lead can
be used from any position inside the laboratory.

2.3.4 Lighting of the laboratory

Test hall lighting luminaires should be arranged in rows. Each row would have its own
switch or dimmer control. The luminous intensity for the test hall area should be around
600 lux. The intensity should be adjustable for at least 50% of the lamps through a dimmer
control, the rest use the regular on/off switch control. This provides the possibility of
creating darkened conditions necessary for observation of partial or complete discharge
and for photography.
A second system of lights is needed. It will also be fed from the main power source,
controlled with switch located in the control room, near the access doors from the
auxiliary building to the test hall, as well as any entrance from the street to the test hall.
As illumination level of around 20lux is sufficient.
Provisions should be made for a general emergency lighting system, to permit the facilities
to be vacated safely in case of any interruption or failure of the regular power supply.
A special red light system should be available in the test hall.
Control room should be provide with an illumination level of around 300 lux.
