AIR MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Air Management System consists of:

- Pneumatics the air to be used
- Environmental Control System (ECS) regulates and distributes the air
- Pressurization maintains a safe cabin altitude

Pneumatics
- Gets air from:
o Engines
o APU
o External air source

- Used for: (PEEWA)

o ECS
o Engine Start
o Pressurization
o Anti-Ice
o Water Pressure

Engines
- Provide bleed air from the 6th (low) and 10th (high) stages of the compressor
- Pre-cooler cools incoming air
- Engine bleed is used for
o ECS (Environmental Control System)
o Anti-Ice
o Water Pressure
o Pressurization
o Engine Start

APU
- APU bleed air used for:
o ECS (Environmental Control System)
o Water Pressure
o Pressurization
o Engine Start

External Air Source

- Air conditioning cart can be used to cool the aircrafts cabin
- Huffer cart or air bottle can be used to start an aircrafts engine
- Both packs need to be turned OFF when starting with an external air source to prevent air
contamination to the cockpit and cabin
ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL SYSTEM (ECS)

- Two Packs (one located in each wing to fuselage fairing)

- Engine 1 provides for pack 1
- Engine 2 provides for pack 2
- Incoming air temperature is set via temperature control knobs in the cockpit or the cabin can be
controlled by the Flight Attendant via a temperature control knob on the Flight Attendants
forward galley control panel
- A single pack can provide air for the entire ECS to a maximum of FL310

Recirc Fans
- Help reduce the load on the packs by recirculating the already-conditioned air and remixing it
with incoming cabin/cockpit air
- Provide 52% fresh air to 48% recirculated air
- Fans will not work when:
o The DUMP button is pressed
o Smoke is detected in the recirc bay
o The respective pack is OFF

Gasper Ventilation
- Provides personal air to each pilot and passenger positions
- Supplied by air from the right recirc fan

Electronic Compartment Ventilation

- Forward, central and aft electronic bays are ventilated with conditioned air from the cabin and
expelled overboard

Cargo Bays Ventilation

- Forward receives air from the cabin and then vented overboard
- Aft not vented

Emergency Ram Air Ventilation

- Allows aircraft ventilation in case of failure of the packs
- Emergency ram air enters the left side of the system through a valve if:
o In flight and
o Both packs are off/failed and
o Below 25,000 feet
- Emergency ram air enters the right side of the system through a check valve that opens when:
o Outside pressure > inside pressure

Pre-Cooler
Uses fan and/or ram air to cool the bleed air coming from the engines going to the ECS

Trim Air
- Allows passenger front and rear cabin to be at different temperatures by controlling the amount
of bleed air from pack 2 that enters the mixing plenum
PRESSURIZATION
- Controlled by:
- Cabin Pressurization Control System (CPCS)
o Cabin Pressurization Controller (CPC)
o Outflow Valve (OFV)
o Negative Pressure Relief Valve (NPRV)
o Positive Pressure Relief Valve (NPRV)
o Static Port

CPC
- Controls OFV
- 2 channels
- Alternate each flight

OFV
- Regulates the amount of air leaving pressure vessel in order to maintain aircraft pressurization
- AUTO function controlled by CPC
- MAN function pilot requests desired position of OFV
- LFE allows manual input of landing field elevation while still operating in the AUTO mode

NPRV
- Opens automatically when outside (ambient) pressure > cabin pressure
o Limitation: -0.50 psi

Positive Pressure Relief Valve

- Opens when cabin pressure reaches 8.6 psi (OFV failure)

Static Port
- Senses and transmits environmental static pressure to the Positive Pressure Relief Valve

Dump Function
- Only works in AUTO mode
- Shuts OFF packs and recirc fans
- Allows cabin to climb to a max of 12,400 feet @ 2,000 feet/min rate
