Technology Enhanced Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Do You Know The Periodic Table?

Context: This lesson was created to help students understand how to read and examine a
periodic table. Also students will attain knowledge of certain elements properties. (Ex.
Hydrogen, helium, aluminum, Etc.). This lesson will be taught before students find out there are
groups and families within the periodic table. (Ex. the noble gases).

Objectives: Student will be able to read a periodic table.

Students will be able to understand the content of a periodic table. (Know where the atomic
number and mass is located. Etc.)
Students will understand the properties of certain elements.
State Standards: 7.P.2A.2 Obtain and use information about elements (including chemical
symbol, atomic number, atomic mass, and group or family) to describe the organization of the
periodic table

Materials: Tablet, PowerPoint, Periodic Table, BrainPop, The Periodic Table by WebElements
(website)

Procedures:
Introduction (15 minutes): I will began class with an entrance slip (this will count as attendance
for this day). The questions will consist of things like What do you already know about the
periodic table?, What do you hope to learn today. After this I will split the students up into
groups of 5 then explain to them what we will be doing today (the different stations what will be
happening at each station).
Teacher Directed (15 minutes): For this rotation, I will show a PowerPoint on the periodic table
that shows some of the different elements and explains what the atomic number and atomic mass
are and where to find them on the element. The students will have guided notes on the
PowerPoint. I will answer any further questions the students need to be answered.
Collaborate (15 minutes): For this station students will watch a BrainPop on the periodic table
and each student in the group write at least one thing they learned down. After this they will
complete the quiz as a group at the end of the video.

Independent Digital Content (15 minutes): For this station, the students will check out the
website (https://www.webelements.com/) and write down the atomic number and mass of the
following elements. (Hydrogen, helium, aluminum, and nickel). After this the students will get
their tablets and use the Periodic Table app to find as much additional information on the
following elements; hydrogen, helium, aluminum and nickel.

Closure (10 minutes): To close the day out I will have students answer exist slips. The questions
will be What did you learn today? and What is your favorite element?

Rationale:
Periodic Table: this app will allow students to easily find the elements I chose for them to find.
The students can watch the videos this app has on the elements.
The Periodic Table by WebElements: This website has a great layout of the periodic table that
will help the students find the answers to the questions I have asked them to find.
BrainPop: The BrainPop video is a great way to get the students willing to learn in a fun way.
The quiz at the end of the video is a good indicator on which groups learned the most from the
days activities.
