AMENITIES AND FIRST AID

2
Workplace amenities and first aid
Amenities are facilities essential for the
welfare or personal hygiene needs of
employees.
They prevent the spread of germs and
disease, prevent ill health from exposure to
contamination and meet the basic human
needs of employees.

3
Workplace Amenities
What amenities do I need to have?
Depends on your industry and business activities.
Before the decision:
Talk to employees, health and safety
representatives about their needs, (Consider
size, location, Number of employees, Gender,
Type of work, distance of the nearest amenities
etc.) and legal requirements.
Facilities should ensure adequate privacy and
security for all employees. 4

EMERGENCY PLAN

5
Emergency Action Plan
OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health
Administration) requires that
Employers record emergency action plans in
writing unless there are
10 or fewer employees. If there are 10 or
fewer employees, the employer
May verbally communicate the plan.
6
Emergency Plan
Why have an emergency plan?
A definite plan to deal with major emergencies
is an important element of H&S programs.
The planning process may bring to light
deficiencies, such as the lack of resources
(equipment, trained personnel, supplies), or
items that can be rectified before an emergency
occurs. It promotes safety awareness and
shows the organization's commitment to the
safety of workers. 7
Why Emergency plan
The lack of an emergency plan could lead to:
Severe losses such as multiple casualties and
possible financial collapse of the
organization.
An attitude of "it can't happen here" may be
present. People may not be willing to take
the time and effort to examine the problem.
However, emergency planning is an
important part of company operation.
8
Emergency Plan
Since emergencies will occur, preplanning is
necessary to prevent possible disaster. An
urgent need for rapid decisions, shortage of
time, and lack of resources and trained
personnel can lead to chaos during an
emergency.

9
Emergency Plan
Time and circumstances in an emergency
mean that normal channels of authority and
communication cannot be relied upon to
function routinely. The stress of the situation
can lead to poor judgement resulting in
severe losses.

10
Emergency Plan
Required actions in case of emergency.
For example:
Declare emergency
Sound the alert
Evacuate danger zone
Close main shutoffs
Call for external aid
Initiate rescue operations
Attend to casualties
Fight fire 11
