Volleyball

Setting Lesson Plan



Lesson Focus: Setting the Volleyball
Instructor: Paige White
Equipment Needed: Volleyballs, Volleyball Nets
Grade Level: 9-12
State Standards: 9-12: 1.1.b, 1.1.c, 3.1.a, 4.1.e, 5.1.a, 5.1.b, 5.1.c, 5.1.d, and 6.1.a

I. INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY (WARM UP): 5-10 minutes

A. OBJECTIVES:
1. Students will get their muscles warm and ready for physical activity.
2. Students will prevent injury by properly warming up muscles.

B. FORMATION:
Students will line up on the baseline near the door and wait for instruction.

C. EXPLANATION OF ACTIVITY
o Students will lightly jog two laps around the gym.
o Shuffle down and back across court making a fanning X motion
o Jog while doing arm circles (down and back)
o High knees down (exaggerated arm motions)
o Butt kickers back
o Hug knee, step into lunge (down)
o Skips (back) (high and exaggerated)
o Air squats (10)
o Invisible Jump Rope (10)
o Wrist circles (10)
o Stretch both shoulders

D. SAFETY:
1. Students need to be arms length apart to avoid collision.
2. Students need to be aware of those around them.
3. Do not squat/stretch/lunge to the point of discomfort or pain.

E. TRANSITION:
After completing the warm up, have students form a semi circle close to the instructor to deliver the
next part of the lesson.
II. LESSON FOCUS SETTING THE VOLLEYBALL:

A. OBJECTIVES:
1. Students will learn how to properly set a volleyball.
2. Students will learn the importance/purpose of setting a volleyball.
3. Students will increase cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, and coordination.
B. FORMATION:
1. Stand in a semi circle around the instructor.
2. Stand in a semi circle around the instructor.
3. Students will partner up, find a general space, and keep several feet between groups.
4. Students will partner up, find a general space, and keep several feet between groups.
5. Students will form circular groups of around 5-6, find a general space, and keep several feet
between groups.
6. Three people on front row of both sides of the net. Everyone else is in lines with a ball.

C. EXPLANTATION OF ACTIVITY:
1. Explain the importance of the set to the game of volleyball. (1 minute)
o The set gets the ball into a high position with less spin to set the ball up to be spiked (strong
offensive move).
o Setter is a specialized position but every player should have this basic skill.
o If the setter hits the serve someone else has to be able to set.
2. Describe/demonstrate the correct form for a set. (1-2 minutes)
o Athletic stance: knees bent, legs shoulder width apart.
o Make a triangle with your thumbs/index fingers and pull apart. Should form a window
that is positioned above your forehead. Elbows should be bent.
o Get underneath ball.
o Make contact with ball on finger pads and push the ball up in the air by extending
elbows/legs like a spring! (Push with finger pads, dont do flicking motion=carry)
o Make everyone practice without the volleyball 2 or 3 times.
3. Practice the Set (3-5 minutes)
o Partner up.
o Practice controlling set first.
o Sitting Set: 10 sets, 10 throws to partner.
o Standing Set: 10 sets, 10 throws to partner
4. Pepper (5 minutes)
o Partner up.
o Practice incorporating bump and set.
o Pass back and forth with partner using bump or set. To increase difficulty, stand farther apart.
o Rally as long as possible!
5. Group Set/Squat Activity (5 minutes)
o Form groups of 5-6 in a circle.
o Students will practice setting back and forth to each other.
o After you set/bump the ball, you must do a squat (good dynamic exercise)
o Rally as long as possible!
6. Latter Drill (5-7 minutes)
o Three people in front row on both sides.
o Everyone else needs a ball, forms a line on each side.
o Practice setting, but bump if you need to.
o First person in each line sets to the first person in the row, they return, then set to the second
person, they return, set to the third person, they return.
o When you get to end of the row you become the third person in the row. The first person in the
row moves up and gets in line to do the drill.
o Work on accuracy and placement of ball.
D. SAFETY:
1. Balls on the ground or in hand when instructor is speaking.
2. Remove jewelry, wristwatches, ect .to avoid injury.
3. Be aware of the ball movement at all time.
4. Keep several feet distance between groups when doing drills.
5. Be aware of other groups/ball movement during drills.
6. Always make sure your partner/group is looking before you toss/pass them the ball.

E. TRANSITION:
Students will shag balls and form a semi circle around the instructor.


III. CLOSURE:

A. OBJECTIVIES:
1. Students will properly cool the body down after activity.
2. Teacher will check for understanding of how to properly do a set.
3. Teacher will check for understanding of the importance of a set.

B. FORMATION:
Students will complete cool down activity and then from a circle around the gorilla.

C. EXPLANATION OF ACTIVITY:
o Students will walk a lap around the gym.
o Students will perform light static stretches
o Semi-Straddle (left and right)
o Butterfly
o Shoulders (hand behind neck, left and right)
o Calf Stretch
o Check for understanding
o What shape do you make with your thumbs/index fingers when setting the ball?
o What is the importance of setting?
o What does a proper set look like?
o Hands in, break class.
