Unit Title: Mathematical Patterns and Functions

Grade: 4th
Length: 2 weeks
Essential Question(s):
1) How can the next element in a pattern be predicted?
2) Why are symbols used to represent a missing number?
3) Why is finding the unknown quality important?
Colorado State Standards:
Content Area: Mathematics
Standard 2: Patterns, functions and algebraic structures.
Concept 1: Number patterns and relationships can be represented by symbols.
Unit Goals:
1) By the end of the week, students will be able to find the missing number in a sequence
and a number pattern.
2) By the end of the unit, students will be able to complete an in and out table.
3) By the end of the unit, Students will be able to identify weather a number 1 to 100 is
prime or composite.
Unit Assessments:
Pre-assessment: Students will be given a pretest at the beginning of the unit. The students will
complete an in and out table with a rule being given, single digit numbers will be given and
students will need to identify weather or not the given number is prime or composite. The test
would only be about 8 to 10 questions. The pretest would also be multiple choice, due to the
fact that the students do not know anything about the subject.
Homework Assignment: Students will be required to do a KWL graphic organizer on prime and
composite numbers that way I can answer any questions that students have, and clear up any
confusion. Additionally, the students will need to explain how to complete a in and out table.
And will need to add the proper vocabulary necessary.
Formative Assessment: Towards the end of the class period each student will be given 3
problems before moving onto the next subject. The problems will be based on the lesson
taught during class possibly even a question or problem from the homework the night before.
Mid-unit check: Students will work in groups of two to create a little book that explains weather
the numbers 1-100 are prime or composite. The book must have an explanation on how a
student can identify how a number is prime or composite.
Unit Evaluation: The students will be given a former final exam that examines the performance
of each students. Each student will have to complete the exam independently.
Unit Overview:
In this unit, students will make claims about relationships among numbers, shapes and defend
those claims by relying on the properties that are the structures of math. This unit will involve
students having to seek patterns. Students can be able to make generalizations based on
patters and relationships that are from numbers, shapes, symbols and data. The content is
important to teach because students will need to
Include Rationale!
Main Idea(s):
1) Using input and output table, and symbols to help connect everyday situations.
2) The relationship between prime and composite numbers will also help the students
develop a number sense.
Unit Calendar:
Lesson 1: Pre-assessment given at the beginning of class. A brief overview of the unit will be
presented to the students. This lesson will cover input and output table. Students will use real
numbers and even shapes to complete missing parts of the table.
Lesson 2: A review from the previous lesson will be given; Intro ticket. Lesson would be a
continuation on previous class period. This time the student would be a rule for the input and
output table. The students will also be given a table and they would have to explain what the
rule is.
Lesson 3: Lesson will be on answering a simple word problem related to real life scenarios.
Simple problems will be given at the time.
Lesson 4: A diagnostic assessment will be given on just in and out tables. Just to Check for
Understanding.
Lesson 5: Students will move to learning about prime and composite numbers. Examples will be
given during the lesson. I will check for understanding using white board and a marker.
Students will write their answer on a white board and from there I will check their answers.
Lesson 6: Students will be given the definition of factor and multiple. From there students will
learn how to find each subject with the numbers 1-100.
Lesson 7: An overview will be taught on how to find the multiples and factors. Students will
have a chance to work in a group of 3 to answer a set of numbers and they would need to
identify each the multiple and factor for the given number.
Lesson 8: A lesson will be taught on prime and composite numbers and how to identify them.
An independent worksheet will be then done alone.
Lesson 9: The students will begin their project on the book. Before the students begin they will
first need to tell me how the numbers from 1 to 100 can be distinguished from a prime or
composite number. Once I understand that the students get it; I will pair the students up and
they will work on it as a group.
Lesson 10: The students will continue and finish working on the book.
Lesson 11: A practice test will be given to the students. From there; looking at the test I will see
what topics I would need to go over again.
Lesson 12: The students will begin and finish their formative assessment of the unit
independently..
Resources Needed:
Projector, Computer, KWL graphic organizer, white board, expo markers. Construction paper,
makers, and scissors.
