N479 Professional Activity Evaluation Form

Your Name: Milena Carrera Date of Activity: 2/18, 2/25 Faculty name: Mary OConnell

Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with

(be specific about the purpose and your role): I participated in the St. Lukes IPEP Clinic and

the Medical Reserve Corps Mass Casualty Training. The purpose of the St. Lukes IPEP Clinic

was to provide respiratory screenings, specifically for COPD, to elders while collaborating as an

interdisciplinary team of pharmacy, medical, nursing, and nutrition students. As a group, we

asked the elder about their past respiratory history and performed a respiratory assessment.

Afterwards, we consulted with a nursing professor and medical doctor on treatment suggests; and

then relayed those back to the patient. I took part in all of these aspects, including questions,

physical assessment, report to the doctor, and then patient education. The purpose of the Mass

Casualty Training was to train people on how to protect themselves as well as communities

during disasters. In this activity we were taught situational awareness, direct/indirect threat care,

first aid kits, wound packing, and general emergency casualty care. We performed a mock

disaster exercise where groups hypothetically worked as communities during an extreme disaster

event. During this event I took part in choosing resources for my hypothetical community, and

trading resources with other communities.

Where was this held and what was the program/activity length?

The St. Lukes IPEP on 2/25 was held at the St. Lukes Home on East Adams Street and lasted

four hours. The Mass Casualty Training took place on 2/18 at the Tucson Fire Department, Fire

Station #1 and lasted four hours.

Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).

Both of these activities were very valuable to me because I was able to learn new information
that will be helpful as I enter the workforce. The St. Lukes IPEP Clinic was valuable because I

was reminded that this job is a team effort. Every team member brought a new perspective that

was useful in treating the patients. Due to our variety of knowledge, we were all leaders at some

point. I believe this allowed us to respect each other and work collaboratively rather than

authoritatively. The Mass Casualty Training was valuable because I have never been in a disaster

before; therefore all of this information was new. I was gaining knowledge about what situations

are common currently, what actions to take, and how to use casualty tools. I learned that extreme

disasters require a lot of coordination and leadership. There are multiple aspects and resources

that need to be optimally utilized in order to prevent harm and quickly treat communities. This

was valuable to me because I now feel that I could be a leader when faced with a disaster

situation.

Would you recommend this specific communnity/professional experience in the future; why

or why not? (Describe)

I would highly recommend both of these experiences. I would recommend St. Lukes because

students are actually communication with other specialty students and engaging with real

patients. This activity was hands on, interactive, and an engaged learning experience that

provided real life situations. I would also recommend the Mass Casualty Training because it is a

specialized set of knowledge that we do not get taught in the nursing college. Because of this, the

information was new, and I was curious and actively listening to the information provided. The

presentation was educational and interactive; therefore I felt that my time was well spent. Overall

both of these experiences were useful and I had fun while learning!
