Grand Central Terminal: A Short History

Grand Central Terminal is one of the most famous and beautiful buildings in New York City. Every year,
thousands of native New Yorkers and sightseers who aren't taking one of the many trains that serve the station
still make time to visit this magnificent structure.

The Old Grand Central

Before the construction of Grand Central Terminal, another train station called Grand Central Depot was
located on this spot. When it was built in 1871, it was the largest indoor space in the entire United States. The
person responsible for establishing it was Cornelius Vanderbilt, the man who created the New York Central
Railroad. As his railroad business grew beyond New York State, he managed to connect New York City and
Chicago with a single rail line. This was an extremely successful project from an economic point of view.
However, it was so successful that within 30 years the depot was too crowded and unsafe for operation.

The New Grand Central

The kind of trains that were used in the late 1800s were dirty, noisy, and dangerous. They ran above the
ground, making the area surrounding the station extremely unpleasant and unsafe. After a particularly terrible
accident in 1902, talk of modernizing the old Grand Central Depot began. At this point, a decision was made
to build a whole new station and to use electrical equipment to help solve the current problems. The plan
permitted modern electrically-powered trains to run underground. The project featured a series of office
buildings and hotels conveniently connected to the station by underground walkways. Construction of the new
Grand Central Terminal was completed in 1913.

The Story Continues

Although the terminal was a very successful operation for many years, there were problems during the 1950s,
when rail business fell off as air travel and driving became increasingly popular. Then, in the 1960s, plans
were made to build a huge new building over the station, which threatened to destroy its beauty. Problems like
these will probably continue, but with the help of the people who love it, this very special building will surely
survive.

The Future of New Orleans

Hurricane Katrina, which struck New Orleans in August 2005, focused the nation's attention on this historical
southern city. Known for its mixture of Dixieland music, French-influenced cooking, and an easygoing way
of life, New Orleans is one of the oldest communities in the country. The widespread destruction of property
and loss of life brought about by Hurricane Katrina caused about a third of the residents to leave and not
return. The other two-thirds have decided to stay and try to rebuild. But it's not going to be an easy job.

New Orleans is located in one of the lowest spots in the entire United States, on the banks of the Mississippi
River where it meets the Gulf of Mexico. The city, founded in 1718, has been under water 27 times in its 291-
year history, about once every 11 years. Each time, the people of New Orleans have survived and rebuilt their
beloved hometown. However, today there are so many problems that some local engineers are implying that
the city should be relocated to higher ground, or perhaps not be rebuilt at all.

One of the main problems is that most of the city is located below sea level, with many areas as much as five
meters below that point! In addition, the land under the city continues to sink about 2.5 centimeters (1 inch)
every year. Another problem that can't be ignored is the fact that global warming is causing the ocean to rise.
Some predictions say it will be several feet higher by the end of this century. But even before that happens,
hurricanes seem to be drawing ever more energy from warming seas and are growing stronger and more
frequent. This set of circumstances indicates that more major floods are almost certain in the near future.

Currently a combination of levees---tall sea walls that hold back the water---and large pumps, which move
water out of low-lying sectors, are being used to help keep New Orleans dry. Despite measures such as these,
however, the future of New Orleans is still not secure.
