one book that I recommend there that is not yet in the Answer Wiki (as of March 2
2016) is "Game Theory: An Introduction" by Steven Tadelis

This is the best introduction to game theory. It's written by a computer scientist
working in game theory so I think it's accessible to a wider audience.
It's also new, free, and online. (Can also buy the physical book)

If you are looking for something totally general and have heard of Game Theory but
don't entirely grasp even what it even is, I would watch the scene in "A Beautiful
Mind" where Nash discovers out "Governing Dynamics" (and disproves Adam Smith)
it is a cornerstone of Game Theory:
I would then start reading through the introductory and review notes (in addition to
the class slides) from the Game Theory class at MIT (on Opencourseware)

There is also notes from the same class on a website (outside of opencourseware) form

Yale also has a course on Game Theory, I believe a lecture from it is posted:

It is much more readable as a book than the classical works by von Neumann. It is a
very good book if you want an overview of the ideas and applications of game theory
and want to drive deeper into the mathematics and more advanced areas after you
have a good overview.
This book combines the mathematics with the underlying concepts very well, where
as most of the other text books are dry and mathematically challenging and dicult
to apply in comparison.

It's a textbook, but still it's a very readable one. At the end of each chapter there are
problems (with answers) to check your understanding.
Unfortunately, (and in contrast to the Thinking Strategically book that others have
recommended) if you really want to learn game theory, you just can't pass over the 29

math - it's the basis of game theory. So, it makes sense to brush-up on your matrix
algebra too.
