OVERVIEW

The IU Southeast Professional Development Program empowers students


to develop professional skills through career preparation workshops and
webinars, mentorship and events with IU Southeast employer partners.

EMPLOYER GOALS
Provide opportunities for employers to partner with viable,
competitive candidates for internships and professional positions in
the community
Solidify the professional development program as a necessary
recruitment tool for corporate partners
STUDENT GOALS
Provide students an opportunity to apply newly acquired skills and
knowledge in networking situations.
Enhance student hire-ability through demonstrated practice and
knowledge in networking, skill development and professional
etiquette.

STRUCTURE (Basic Requirements)


Eligible students must have 2.5 minimum GPA and must be enrolled in a
career course associated with their academic major.

Certificates will be awarded upon completion of the following


requirements:
Professional Mentoring Program
Complete Skills Assessment/StrengthsQuest
Attend Kick-Off event and be paired with an alumni mentor
Meet with mentor three times during the academic year
Complete Professional Etiquette Webinar Series
Attend one off-campus social event with mentor
Workshops (Choose four)
Job and Internship Search Strategies
Internship Information Session
Resume Writing/Cover Letters
Interview Skills
LinkedIn Lab
Show Us Your Skills Networking Lab
Career or Grad School Action Plans
Senior Year Workshops (Choose one)
Employer Mock Interview
Professional Resume Review with an employer
Events (Required)
Attend two networking events or career fairs (on or off-campus)
Community or Campus Involvement (Choose two and record in
Grenadier Central)
Leadership role and active participation in at least one campus
organization
Minimum of 50 hours of a community service project or job
shadowing experience
Register an internship for credit or non-credit and complete a 14
week semester
Successfully complete a faculty approved research project
Present or compete in a regional/state/national competition

YEARLY PLAN BREAKDOWN


Sophomore Year
Complete a Skills Assessment/StrengthsQuest and formulate
Professional Development Plan
Attend Kick Off event and be paired with an alumni mentor
Arrange to meet mentor three times during the academic year
Complete Professional Etiquette webinar series and turn in Social
Etiquette action plan to mentor prior to attending an off-campus
social event
Complete one workshop
Junior Year
Attend up to three workshops
Complete at least one opportunity for community/campus
involvement and record in Grenadier Central
Attend one networking event or career fair (on or off-campus)
Senior Year
Complete a Resume Review or Mock Interview with an employer
Attend one networking event or career fair (on or off-campus)
Complete at least one opportunity for community/campus
involvement and record in Grenadier Central
Complete workshop requirement
Serve as a Program Ambassador for the Kick Off event

GOALS FOR PROGRAM - Year 1


Develop certificate requirements
Introduce program as a pilot to the College of Business by Fall 2016
Obtain 30 participants
Program Development:
Host three focus groups with the following employer groups and
faculty:
o Group 1: Recruiters
o Group 2: Directors of Human Resources
o Group 3: Alumni
Host one student focus group to determine marketing proposal and
to answer common questions
Introduce program to sophomore Business classes in
September/October 2016
Outcomes:
Offer seven workshops each semester, one Kick Off banquet, one
Etiquette Dinner, three networking events, two Career Fairs, and
arrange individual employer Resume Review and Mock Interview
sessions to support certificate needs.
Present program details to every X220 course in Fall, Spring and
Summer
Sign up 30 or more Sophomore student participants
Facilitate events in partnership with alumni relations, student
organizations and employer partners
Assessment
Alumni mentor feedback evaluation following social event
Student completes assessments following all events and workshops
and exhibits understanding and improvement pertaining to
goals/objectives set in their original Professional Development Plan.
Above average or Superior feedback from employer assessments
following Senior Year workshops.
Concerns
The emergence of badges in student professional development.
o LinkedIn and City of Louisville partnering on professional
development badges for student profiles.
o Article in Chronicle for Higher Education highlights issues with
badges and certifications, and how to sell them to employers.
Ensure outcomes and assessments show students who complete the
program have developed more professional skills than students who
do not complete the program, ex. Failure of CDPIs INdorsed program
Needs
One paid part-time or internship position for administrative help
Partnership with Mentoring and College of Business faculty and
student organizations to help plan and implement events.
Training with ILTE department to utilize online learning for workshops

GOALS FOR PROGRAM - Year 2


Ensure second-year CoB participants are retained at a high
percentage and new student sign-ups meet or exceed previous years
totals.
Introduce program to School of Natural Sciences in Spring 2017 and
prepare for launch by Fall 2017.
Program Development
Meet with Natural Sciences Dean
Meet with faculty department heads to introduce program and
conduct first focus group
Meet with faculty-identified employers and conduct a second focus
group
Meet with focus group of students to ensure program offerings meet
their needs for career, grad school or med school planning.
Present program during class presentations to Sophomore-level
courses
Outcomes
Reach 1.5 to 2x the number of Sophomore participants in Fall 2017
Retain 90% of CoB student participants in Academic Year 2017-2018
Sign up 20 Natural Science sophomores in Fall 2017
Planned Updates
Review participant feedback, and adjust programming and events to
better meet student needs
