Materials:
DVD video: Stop and Shop Healthy Foods Challenge: Activity 1: Nothing but nutrients
Act it out: write out nutrients on note cards, one for each student: water, vitamins,
minerals, fiber, fat, carbs, protein,
Ipad/ Computer/ T.V.
Gregory, the Terrible Eater book by Mitchell Sharmat
Morning Math- Calorie Count Worksheet

Objectives: should be posted in the classroom for the students to reference, as


well as an agenda
by the end of the lesson, students will be able to :
Identify the five different food groups
Understand the importance of eating a nutritious breakfast
Identify the difference between healthy foods and non-healthy foods
Understand the concept of a well-balanced meal
Use addition to count calories on the worksheet

Standards
MACF 5.3 Define character traits such as honesty, trustworthiness, self-discipline,
respectfulness, and kindness and describe their contribution to identity, self-concept,
decision-making, and interpersonal relationships
MACF 6.4 Identify what parents do to provide a safe, healthy environment for their
children
MACF 8.4 Identify tooth functions and causes of tooth health and decay, and apply
proper dental health skills (such as choosing healthy tooth snacks, brushing, flossing)

Introduction: Students sit down in front the the classroom


Teacher should review:
The five food groups
The benefits of healthy eating
The importance of eating breakfast
Provide examples of each food group
Serving Size vs portion size
Nutrients in Calories- good vs bad calories

**Third grade will take the Unit Plan Pre-Test

Activity 1: Stop and Shop Passport to Nutrition Video


The introduction video focuses on key nutrients in foods. It provides an introduction to
the next activity.

Activity 2: Act it Out


The students will perform the activity played in the video. The students will each be
given a note card with a nutrient listed on it. The students will try to shoot for success
and throw the notecard in the center of the room. After the teacher will ask the students
for examples of foods that contain the nutrients from the activity.

Activity 3: Gregory, the Terrible Eater book by Mitchell Sharmat


Read the book out loud to the students.
Discuss the importance of eating healthy foods with every meal

Activity 4: Morning Math- Calorie Count Worksheet


Students will add the calories of different meals for breakfast.
Discuss with students the variety of well balanced meals they can eat for breakfast

Activity 5: Chef Colus Color My Plate Activity Page


The students can use crayons to draw fruits and vegetables and list the nutrients found
in each food they draw.

Activity 6: Food Group Word Search


If there is still time, the students can work in the Food Group Word Search
