Give every student the first three
paragraphs of An overview of the
American Civil War. This can be
read as a class or individually.
When reading is done, allow
students to turn and talk,
summarizing the main points.

Why did seven states
secede from the union?
What did the northerners
think of secession?
The students will be split into two groups, based on the color sticky note they 20 min
got at the beginning of class. One group will represent the north, and the other
will represent the south. Their goal is to find reasons why the OTHER group
is at fault for the Civil War. Ultimately, they need to answer the question:
4. Guided Practice whose fault was the Civil War?.
To do this, they will collaborate to choose who their speakers will be, how
they will conduct research, and to create their statements against the other
group.
Each group will get 5 minutes to make their statements. Then they will get to 15 min
5. Independent Practice rebuttal the other group for 2 minutes.
6. Assessment Methods of Formative: students will be observed to see how they contributed to their groups. Each
all objectives/skills: group will be observed during their short presentations of statements.

Make sure that the groups will work. Dont put any
students who have had conflicts before in the same
group.
