Date:Spring 2017
Course: EDUC 2300 Introduction to Education
School: Ellen Myers Primary

Instructions for the Observer: First, draw a map of the classroom you are observing, including
seating arrangements, placement of furniture, computers, telephone, and other equipment. Give
a brief critique of the effectiveness and use of: technology, lighting, traffic patterns, instructional
displays, management, and motivational elements. Then design your own perfect classroom

1. Draw classroom map:

2. Effectiveness of:
a) Technology:
My service learning teacher had a smart board for her use. She also had a set of 3
iPad she let the students use during center time. She also had a computer station
that had 4 desktop computers.

b) Traffic Patterns:

The teachers desk is at the back left corner of the classroom. This gives the rest
of the classroom to the students. There are two rug stationed on each side of the
room. The circle rug is for reading, and the other rug is for the smart board use.
The students are in large tables where four students sit together. This helps the
students have group discussions, and help the student see if they are on task with
their peers. This is a positive traffic pattern. The students have plenty of room for
centers and reading time, while their desks sit in the middle of the room.
Instructional Displays:
The wall is covered with colorful posters with material the students have learned.
She also has a bulletin board for students art work and good grades. This does
help the teacher throughout the day, because there are posters or the daily
schedule for students to see.

c) Classroom Management:
Mrs. Lacey has a very good classroom management. In the morning students
begin to work on their morning work, but if they have breakfast the students know
they are not allowed to go to their desks but instead to the round table. The
students raise their hand before they are allowed to get up out of their seats.
Which is a great way for the students not to go to the restroom without the teacher
knowing in case of emergency. The students were very behaved and follow Mrs.
Laceys rules.

d) Motivational Elements:
- Mrs. Lacey uses exit tickets, good bucks, and bubbles as her motivation. After the
students have gathered to the circle rug and went over there lesson they are given a
exit ticket. This ticket is a yellow small piece of paper. They then put this in their
cubby. Good bucks work in a similar way, except they can receive them for multiple
things such as; cleanliness, attitude, and behavior. When they students reach 50 good
bucks they are allowed to have lunch with the teacher. Mrs. Lacey also uses the
bubble system on the app Class Dojo. This app is also able for the parents to see how
the students behave during the day. The bubbles are only for a individual students
behavior. If the students receive one bubble they sit in a timeout chair for 10 minutes.
When the students reach two they must sit out of recess, and the final third bubble the
parents are informed.
