Chapter 6: Applications of the Derivative

A. Finding Absolute Extrema
i. Find all critical numbers of the function in (a,b)
ii. Evaluate the function for all critical numbers in (a,b)
iii. The Largest Value = the maximum
iv. The Smallest Value = the minimum
B. Implicit Differentiation
i. Differentiate both sides with respect to x
ii. All terms with dy/dx go on one side of the = sign & all
terms without go on the other side
iii. Factor out dy/dx, then solve for dy/dx
C. Solving Related Rate Problems
i. Identify and label all given values
ii. Identify and label all unknown values
iii. Write an equation relating the variables to each other
iv. Use implicit differentiation to find the derivative of both
sides of the equation
v. Solve for the derivative
