TheGalileosystemwasmovedfromDenver,Colorado,totheWorldspandatacenterinAtlanta,Georgia,onSeptember28,2008,followingthe2007mergerof
TravelportandWorldspan(althoughtheynowsharethesamedatacenter,theycontinuetoberunasseparatesystems).

GalileoissubjecttotheCappsIIanditssuccessorSecureFlightprogramfortheselectionofpassengerswithariskprofile.

Galileotracesitsrootsbackto1971whenUnitedAirlinescreateditsfirstcomputerizedcentralreservationsystemunderthenameApollo.Duringthe1980sand
early1990s,asignificantproportionofairlineticketsweresoldbytravelagents.Flightsbytheairlineowningthereservationsystemhadpreferentialdisplayonthe
computerscreen.DuetothehighmarketpenetrationoftheSabreandApollosystems,ownedbyAmericanAirlinesandUnitedAirlines,respectively,Worldspan
andGalileowerecreatedbyotherairlinegroupsinanattempttogainmarketshareinthecomputerreservationsystemmarketand,byinference,thecommercial
airlinemarket.[2]Galileowasformedin1987bynineEuropeancarriersBritishAirways,KLMRoyalDutchAirlines,Alitalia,Swissair,AustrianAirlines,
Olympic,Sabena,AirPortugalandAerLingus.[3]

Inresponseandtopreventpossiblegovernmentintervention,UnitedAirlinesspunoffitsApolloreservationsystem,whichwasthencontrolledbyCovia.Galileo
InternationalwasbornwhenCoviaacquiredEurope'sGalileoandmergeditwiththeApollosystemin1992.[3]
TheApolloreservationsystemwasusedbyUnitedAirlinesuntilMarch3,2012,whenitswitchedtoSHARES,asystemusedbyitsformerContinentalAirlines
subsidiary.ApolloisstillusedbyGalileoInternational(nowpartofTravelportGDS)travelagencycustomersintheUnitedStates,Canada,Mexico,andJapan.

GalileoUKwasoriginallycreatedfromTravicom[4][5][6][7]whichwastheworld'sfirstmultiaccessreservationssystemusingthetechnologydevelopedby
Videcom.TravicomwasacompanylaunchedbyVidecom,BritishAirways,BritishCaledonianandCCLin1976whichin1988becameGalileoUK.

TravelAgentsnowalsobookAmtrakRailonthesystemandissuetheticketsdirectly.
SouthwestAirlineshasenteredintoamarketingagreementwithApollo/GalileoandtravelagentsarenowabletobookreservationsonSouthwest.These
directconnectsofferthepossibilitytosellancillaryservicesandtodifferentiateoneselffromthecompetition.[8]
