Grade Level: 2nd
School: Hamlin
Date: 3-13-17

students have been out of the room when the nouns and verbs had been talked about the first time.

Lesson Goal(s) / Standards:

2.L.1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage
when writing or speaking.

Lesson Objectives:
During lesson, students will be able to complete noun and verb worksheet with 100% accuracy.
Learning Target: I can sort nouns and verbs.

Materials Needed:
Promethean board
Noun and verb cards
Noun and Verb worksheet
Scissors and Glue
Noun and Verb flashcards

Contextual Factors/ Learner Characteristics:

This class needs more redirection during whole class instructions because they sometimes have a
hard time focusing on the discussion. They like to talk to their neighbors and chat while sitting on the
carpet. Redirect them back to the discussion and make sure they are behaving how they are expected to.
In this class, there are students I need to make sure are looking at me during the discussion and
some students who need to be using a good indoor second grade voice. They like to whisper answers
while in a whole group setting. Make sure they use a good second grade voice and speak up. There is one
student that may stand at his desk or in the back of the group during carpet. This is so he can move easier
to focus in class.

A. The Lesson

1. Introduction (3 min)
getting attention- Welcome back second graders we are going to do things a
little different today. Put your binder in your pocket and come take a seat on the carpet. (Give
them time to listen and follow directions.) I really like how ______ came in and followed
directions quickly and quietly, great job. I need everyone up front on the carpet in 5..4
3..please sit on your pockets.2..1. Great job, thank you for doing that quickly.
sharing objective, in general terms Today we are going to be reviewing
nouns and verbs.
relating to past experience and/or knowledge We are reviewing because I
know we have worked on nouns and verbs some in the past and some of you know your stuff.
creating a need to know But reviewing what you know is always good to do
so you make sure you know what you have learned.

2. Content Delivery (20-25 Min)

Today we are going to review nouns and verbs. Who can tell me what a noun is? (Let a few students
tell you what they remember a noun is.) Good, a noun is a person, place, or thing. A noun is the
subject of our sentences. Who can give me one example of a noun? (Let about 5-6 students give you
examples of nouns. EX) school, student names, animals.) Great job those were all good examples.

Now lets talk about verbs. What is a verb? (Have students tell you the definition of verbs, not
examples.) Okay that is an example of a verb but I want to know what is the meaning of a verb.
______ can you tell me what a verb is? Good, a verb is action that you do. It is what our noun is
doing in a sentence. It is an action word. Now, who can give me a few examples of verbs? (Again let
5-6 students give examples of verbs.) Nice job, those were good examples.

Now I have here on the smart board a quick game that will let you all get some practice noticing
nouns and verbs. (Pull up the ABCya activity site.) We will read the sentences on the board and I will
draw a name and you must tell me either a verb you see in the sentence or a noun. (Begin the game
and let all the students have a chance to pick and noun or verb out from the sentences.) Great job with
this guys.

I have an activity for you all to do. On this worksheet, you have specific noun and verb clovers down
at the bottom of the page. You must cut these words out and glue either next to a noun clover or a
verb clover at the top of the page. When you are done with this hand it in the basket. Does anyone
have any questions about the worksheet? (Answer any questions.) Okay make a line to get your
worksheet and get started. (Walk around while students are working on the activity. Answer any
questions the students have. Also, when they hand in their paper check it and show them any
corrections they have and work with them to understand the mistake.)

3. Closure (5 Min)
Nice job second graders. You have done a great job listening thank you. Now I am going to give you a
little card. You cannot tell anyone your card or show anyone your card. You have to read it and look at the
picture and then decide by yourself if it is a noun or a verb. Then I will call you up and you must place
your card on the board either under the noun column or the verb column. Does anyone have any question
about what we are going to be doing right now? (Answer any questions or clear up confusion.) Okay
______ table why dont you go first. Grab a magnet and put your card under the column you think it
needs to go under. (After each group goes, talk about the new cards placed on the board with the whole
class.) Under the noun column we have the picture, cup. Thumbs up if you agree that cup is a noun. (Wait
time.) Okay thumbs down if you disagree. (Wait time.) Those of you who had thumbs up tell me why a
cup is a noun. _________, why do you think a cup is a noun? (Let the student explain their thinking.) Yes,
that is correct. A cup is a noun because a noun is a person place or thing and a cup is a thing. Now under
the verb column we have a dog. Thumbs up if you agree that a dog is a verb. (Wait time.) Okay if you
disagree show me a thumb down. (Wait time.) ________, you had your thumb down. Why do you think a
dog is not a verb? (Let the student prove why a dog is not a verb. Because a verb is an action word and a
dog is an animal and animals are nouns.) Great explanation! (Do this process until every student has
placed their card on the board.) Great job today second graders! You showed me that you really know
your nouns and verbs! It is now time for library so I need you to quietly line up and get ready to go to
library.
B. Assessments Used
Questions during discussion How did they do answering the following questions? Could
they give examples of nouns and verbs?
o Asking who knows what a noun is, a verb. Asking students to give examples of each
verbs and nouns.
ABCya.com Game - Were the students able to find nouns and verbs correctly during activity?
o This game will give the students another opportunity to practice recognizing nouns and
verbs. I can see how they do with picking out nouns and verbs in a sentence structure.
Cut and Paste Worksheet - Can the students correctly sort nouns and verbs?
o This sheet will show me how well each student was listening during the discussion. I
will be able to go back and look at each student individually and see if they were
understanding the concept.
Card Sort Could each student sort their card correctly into the verb or noun column?
o Students will each place a noun or verb card into the correct column on the board. I will
ask questions for students to prove their reasoning for putting their cards in the column
they choose.

C. Differentiated Instruction
For advanced students These students will get the worksheet done quickly and correctly.
For these students, I will pair them up and they will do flashcards. The flashcards will have
different nouns and verbs on them and the students must determine if they are nouns or
verbs. This will give them extra practice with different words.
For struggling students These students will probably have trouble with the worksheet
given. I will be walking around and helping them by asking questions that provoke their
thinking. Questions like, what is a noun again? What do we call a verb? What kind of word is
a verb? Lets look at this word can you do this as an action? Just ask different questions to
start their thinking in a different way.
D. Resources
My cooperating teacher and I talked about the lesson and she helped me get a worksheet for the lesson.
