NUR 2101 Group Project: Teaching Plan

Purpose:
The purpose of this assignment is to help the student develop the teaching skills that will
be needed throughout his/her nursing career.
In this group assignment, students will develop and role play a patient teaching scenario.

Instructions:
As a group, create a teaching scenario for your village patient.
Patient teaching topic must be approved by instructor.
Using the nursing and teaching process, develop a plan to teach the content.
Using the nursing and teaching process, complete the attached template; an APA
reference page is required.
Role play the actual teaching scenario on the date listed in the course calendar.
Attendance in class and participation in the teaching scenario is required.

All students in the group are expected to submit the same assignment. If this is not the
case, you must notify both the instructor and the other members of the team.
Teaching Plan Assignment Template

Assessment (these are possible assessment elements):

1. Assess learning needs/expectations

a. Ryan- strategies to increase attention span

b. Grandparents- need to learn about ADHD and be more patient with Ryan

2. Assess motivation to learn

a. Ryan states he wants to make grandma and grandpa happy and not mad at him.

b. Grandparents states tired of repeating themselves and are ready to find a new technique

to calm Ryan down.

3. Assess readiness to learn

a. Ryan is in the stage of acceptance to learn

b. Grandparents are in the stage of acceptance and ready to learn

4. Evaluate the ability to learn: developmental, age group, and physical capabilities.

a. Ryan is 6 years old and that must be taken into account, use developmentally appropriate

information.

b. Grandparents are developmentally and physically capable. Age appropriate information

will be provided.

5. Identify the teaching (learning) environment

a. The nurse is teaching Ryan and grandparents in the grandparents house with no

distractions.

6. Assess learning style (auditory, visual, kinesthetic)

a. Auditory learning will be used with the music therapist

b. Visual learning will be used with a behavioral chart


c. Kinesthetic learning will be used during the behavioral song that will encourage him to

listen and focus on start and stop cues.

7. Assess resources for learning

a. Music therapist, charts and music CD

8. Assess language and cultural factors

a. There are no language or cultural barriers between therapist, grandparents and Ryan.

9. Evaluate health literacy

a. There are no health literacy problems for grandparents or Ryan.

Nursing diagnosis-state the three part nursing diagnosis: Knowledge deficit related to

emotional state affecting learning as evidenced by inaccurate following through with

instructions.

Planning

1. State 2 goals

a. Ryan will integrate learned information into daily life.

b. Grandparents will provide positive, constructive reinforcement of learning and

incorporate rewards into the learning process.

2. State 2 outcomes with each goal

a. Ryan will have three consecutive smiley faces for snack time for a week.

b. Grandparents will state two positive reinforcements by end of session.

3. Evaluate appropriate timing of teaching

Teaching will begin at 2pm after lunch and play time.


4. Discuss the use of teaching materials and provide electronic educational resources (CD,

DVD, software, mobile app)

5. Discuss collaborative care in teaching, if appropriate.

a. The music therapist, nurse, and grandparents are collaborating in order to manage Ryans

behavior.

Implementation

1. Discuss teaching approach

a. Multiple teaching approaches are being used throughout including telling, participating,

entrusting and reinforcing.

2. Identify teaching method

a. Teaching method for Ryan will include discussion, practice, return demonstration and

independent/game, one-on-one discussion, role play.

b. Teaching method for Grandparents will include discussion, role-play, lecture and

practice.

3. Identify the domain of learning associated with teaching methods

a. The domains include affective and psychomotor for both Ryan and the grandparents. The

grandparents will also use cognitive domain of learning.

4. Identify issues with implementation in the areas of illiteracy

a. There are no issues with implementation in the areas of illiteracy.

5. Identify issues with implementation in the area of cultural awareness

a. There are no issues with implementation in the area of cultural awareness.


Evaluation

Identify method of evaluation for each outcome.

a. Ryan successfully achieved consecutive smiley faces on behavioral chart for an entire

week

b. The Grandparents successfully state two positive reinforcements at the end of the

teaching session

Documentation

Provide a brief example of documentation of patient teaching based on the role play

(include topics taught and additional learning needs identified).

a. Ryan displayed an increase in attention span with the use of the song, Wiggle Wiggle

Freeze Dance, in congruence with achieving 3 smiley faces consecutively for a week via

the guidance of grandparents, nurse, and music therapist. Ryan continues to show great

progress and initiative in wanting to achieve more smiley faces for additional daily

activities.

b. Grandparents displayed progress by learning and implementing tools provided by the

nurse and music therapist to better understand how to manage a child with ADHD.

Progress observed by following through with daily activities, resulting in a decrease in

stress.
