RSTune

Technical Data

R software
STune is Rockwell Softwares Windows -based

for analyzing and tuning PID control

loops in Allen-Bradleys MicroLogix, PLC-5, SLC

500, and ControlLogix programmable logic
controllers. Optimizing your process and reducing
process variability with RSTune improves efficiency,
increases productivity, reduces waste, and improves
safety quickly and effectively. Using RSTune, you can
analyze, simulate, document, and download optimal
tuning parameters, all from an intuitive and familiar
software environment. RSTune runs under Windows
95/98/2000 and Windows NT operating environments.

Analysis
The AutoTune sequence reduces the amount of time required to tune a
loop, and minimizes product waste and rework. This feature also helps RSTune provides four powerful advanced analysis windows that allow you

parameters. to perform what-if analysis prior to downloading new tuning settings to
your processor.

The Process Model window shows the process model type identified by
RSTune for your control loop. The software uses your process frequency
response to identify the model. There are two models available:

Allow the gain to float causes RSTune to ignore steady state

information and fit the model based on higher frequencies. Higher
frequencies are more
important to optimal and
stable closed loop control.

2
Force steady state gain forces the steady state gain to be equal to
the amplitude ratio at the lowest frequency.

Also within this window is a table containing the Process Gain, dead-
time, and time constant identified from data collected from your loop.

The Process Frequency Response Plot shows both the actual and
model process frequency responses for comparison purposes. RSTune
uses this information to calculate new tuning parameters.

The Control Loop Simulation Plot shows the system response to

either a load upset or a Setpoint change. It graphs the response for both
the current and new PID parameters so the response can be compared.
This allows you to see the potential improvements in the new PID values
generated by RSTune.

The Robustness Plot shows how sensitive your loop is to process gain
or process dead time changes. This is a powerful tool that graphically
shows the trade-off between tight tuning and stability.
